Image of timberline sagebrush

Description:

Description: alpine sagebrush, Artemisia rothrockii, Lamb Camp, White Mountains, Inyo National Forest, elevation 3590 m (11780 ft). This densely whitish-hairy form of the normally more greenish Artemisia rothrockii is found only in the White Mountains. It has previously been misidentified as low sagebrush (Artemisia arbuscula), which has smaller, more numerous, and hairier heads than Artemisia rothrockii, lacks the persistently white-felty stem hairs of Artemisia rothrockii, and grows at lower elevations mainly farther north and east of the White Mountains. Artemisia rothrockii attains some of the highest elevations of any sagebrush species. Date: 15 August 2015, 14:08. Source: alpine sagebrush, Artemisia rothrockii.
