The white-throated bulbul (Alophoixus flaveolus) is a species of songbird in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is found in south-eastern Asia from the eastern Himalayas to Myanmar and western Thailand. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

Taxonomy and systematics

The white-throated bulbul was originally described in the genus Trichophorus (a synonym for Criniger) until moved to the genus Alophoixus in 2009.^[2] Alternate names for the white-throated bulbul include the ashy-fronted bearded bulbul, ashy-fronted bulbul, white-throated bearded bulbul, and yellow-bellied bulbul. The alternate names 'ashy-fronted bulbul' and 'yellow-bellied bulbul' should not be confused with species of the same name (Pycnonotus cinereifrons and Alophoixus phaeocephalus respectively). The common name 'white-throated bulbul' is also used as an alternate name for each of the white-throated greenbul, eastern bearded greenbul, puff-throated bulbul and yellow-bellied bulbul. The alternate name 'white-throated bearded bulbul' is also used as an alternate name for the eastern bearded greenbul.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized:^[3]

• A. f. flaveolus - (Gould, 1836): Found from eastern Himalayas to northern Myanmar
• A. f. burmanicus - (Oates, 1889): Originally described as a separate species in the genus Criniger. Found in south-eastern Myanmar, southern China and western Thailand

Vitstrupig bulbyl^[2] (Alophoixus flaveolus) är en asiatisk fågel i familjen bulbyler inom ordningen tättingar.^[3]

Fältkännetecken

Utseende

Vitstrupig bulbyl är en bastant, iögonfallande bulbyl med rätt kraftig näbb och hos adulta fåglar spretig och spetsig tofs. Kroppslängden är 21,5-22 cm. Hjässan är brun och strupen vit. Den är vidare gul på bröst och buk samt har rostfärgad anstrykning på vingar och stjärt. Ungfågeln är mattare i färgerna med brunare undersida.^[4][5]

Läten

Vitstrupig bulbyl är en ljudlig fågel som oftare hörs än ses. Den har en bred repertoar läten, alla korta och nasala.^[4]

Utbredning och systematik

Vitstrupig bulbyl delas in i två underarter med följande utbredning:^[3]

• Alophoixus flaveolus flaveolus – förekommer i Himalaya (Nepal till nordöstra Burma)
• Alophoixus flaveolus burmanicus – förekommer från sydvästra Kina (västra Yunnan) till sydöstra Burma till västra Thailand

Arten är närmast släkt med bruntofsbulbyl (Alophoixus pallidus) och ockrabulbyl (Alophoixus ochraceus).^[6]

Levnadssätt

Vitstrupig bulbyl påträffas i undervegetation eller mellersta lagrena i ursprunglig och av människan påverkad städsegrön skog. Den lever huvudsakligen av frukt, inklusive bär, men även insekter. Arten häckar mellan april och juli. Den är stannfågel, men i vissa områden rör den sig till lägre nivåer efter häckningen.^[4]

Status och hot

Arten har ett stort utbredningsområde och en stor population med stabil utveckling.^[1] Utifrån dessa kriterier kategoriserar IUCN arten som livskraftig (LC).^[1] Världspopulationen har inte uppskattats, men den beskrivs som generellt vanlig genom hela utbredningsområdet, dock sällsynt i södra Kina.^[7]

Namn

Fågeln har tidigare kallats vithakad bulbyl på svenska. Notera förväxlingsrisken med den i Afrika förekommande arten vitstrupig grönbulbyl (Phyllastrephus albigularis).
