Lizards of the genus Draco are commonly recognized as Southeast Asian Flying Lizards. This moderate-sized radiation of arboreal lizards is capable of long distance gliding using wing-like patagial membranes supported by elongate thoracic ribs (McGuire and Alcala, 2000). In the Philippines there exist an endemic and species-rich assemblage of species in this genus (McGuire and Alcala, 2000). One of these species is Draco quadrasi, recognized to occur on the islands of Mindoro, Semirara, Romblon and Sibuyan, spanning the Mindoro faunal region (Mindoro PAIC) and island of the Romblon Island Group, in the central and western Philippines. This distribution is unique among Philippine amphibians and reptiles. Suprisingly, the populations on Tablas Island (one of the three major islands of the Romblon Island Group) belong to the widespread species complex D. spilopterus. This species, like D. spilopterus, is quite common throughout its range, and thrives in disturbed habitats dominated by coconut trees. The ability of this species to flourish in coconut plantations and heavily disturbed habitat may have contributed to its wider distribution spanning recognized faunal demarcations. The ventral surface of this species patagium is uniform yellow with sooty outer margins in males and females (McGuire and Alcala, 2000). In males of this species, the dewlap is triangular, and is lemon yellow in coloration (McGuire and Alcala, 2000). Draco quadrasi is one of two species in the Philippines recognized to have a widespread distribution (the other species being D. spilopterus); however, recent work indicates these species may actually be complexes of multiple, morphological similar species (McGuire and Alcala, 2000; McGuire and Heang, 2001).
Draco quadrasi can be distinguished from all other species of Draco in the Philippines by the following combination of characteristics: (1) medium in size; (2) nostrils oriented laterally; (3) enlarged, thornlike supraciliary scale absent; (4) dorsal scales variable in size, often keeled or rugose; (5) tympana scaled over; (6) mode of six ribs supporting patagium; (7) lacrimal bone absent; (8) large black postrictal ocellus surrounding an enlarged white tubercle absent; (9) in males, dorsal surface of patagium orange-yellow, devoid of brown spots, with sooty gray patch along outer margin; (10) in females, patagium mottled with tan and dark brown proximally, grading to yellow and black distally; dark pigments much more extensive than light pigments yielding a generally dark wing; (11-12) ventral surface of patagium of males and females uniform yellow with sooty outer margin; (13) majes with triangular, lemon yellow dewlkp; (14) pale brown dorsal coloration in both sexes; (15) orbital region of males heavily suffused with dark pigments (information taken from McGuire and Alcala, 2000).
Draco quadrasi occurs on the islands of Mindoro, Semirara, Romblon, and Sibuyan in the Philippines.
In a phylogenetic study of species in the genus Draco, McGuire and Heang (2001) recovered sampled populations of D. quadrasi as sister to a clade consisting of D. cyanopterus + D. reticulatus.
Draco quadrasi is has a currently recognized distribution spanning the Mindoro Pleistocene Aggregate Island Complex as well as islands in the Romblon Island Group in the north-central Philippine islands.
Draco quadrasi is common in disturbed habitats dominated by coconut palms.
Maximum recorded SVL up to 86.5 mm
