A perennial, with a cespitose rootstock; stems flexuose, branched, 2-4 dm. high, terete, villous with spreading hairs; leaves 5-8 cm. long; stipules ovate to lanceolate, distinct, 2-4 mm. long; leaflets obovate or obcordate, 8-15 mm. long, 4—8 mm. wide, rounded, retuse, or emarginate at the apex, villous on both sides; peduncles 5-S mm. long; racemes 2-S mm. long; bracts lanceolate, 2 mm. long, nearly as long as the pedicels; calyx villous, 5 mm. long, 3 mm. broad, gibbous below on the upper side; corolla ochroleucous; banner obovate, 14 mm. long; wings about as long, the blade obliquely obovate, acutish at the apex, hastately auricled at the base, shorter than the claw; keel-petals 12 mm. long, the blade broadly lunate, rounded at the apex, a little more than half as long as the claw; pod villous, stipitate, the stipe about 1 cm. long, the body 2.5-3 cm. long, 4-5 mm. wide, curved in a semicircle or less.
Type locality: Headwaters of the Carson River. Nevada. Distribution: Eastern California and western Nevada.

A perennial, with a cespitose woody caudex; stems terete, striate, and villous with spreading hairs, 2-3 dm. high; stipules triangular, striate, distinct, 2-3 mm. long; leaves 4—7 cm. long; leaflets 7-13 obcordate, 8-15 mm. long, 5-10 mm. wide, villous on both sides; peduncles 5-8 cm. long; raceme short and dense, in flower 2-3 cm. long, in fruit 5-7 cm. long; bracts lanceolate, 2-3 cm. long, longer than the pedicels; calyx pilosevillous, the tube 8 mm. long, gibbous below on the upper side, the upper two teeth triangular, the lower three lanceolate, 1 mm. long; corolla ochroleucous, about 14 mm. long, similar to that of H. Gibbsii; pod short villous, stipitate, the stipe about S mm. long, the body lunate, gradually tapering at each end, 2-2.5 cm. long, 7-8 mm. wide, reticulate; seeds reniform, 2.5 mm. long.
Type locality: Sierra County, California. Distribution: Northeastern California.

Astragalus gibbsii is a species of milkvetch known by the common name Gibbs's milkvetch. It is native to eastern California, the north-central Sierra Nevada, and western Nevada, where it grows in the pine forest habitat of the mountains and the sagebrush of the plateaus.
Description
Astragalus gibbsii is low-lying perennial herb forming clumps of hairy, gray-green stems up to 35 centimeters long. Leaves are up to about 9 centimeters long and are made up of several pairs of oval to oblong leaflets. The large inflorescence bears up to 30 yellowish or cream-colored pouched, podlike flowers, each between 1 and 2 centimeters long.
The fruit is a hanging legume pod 2 to 3 centimeters long. It is fleshy when new and dries to a hairy, leathery texture.

Descripción
Es una hierba perenne que forma matas de tallos peludos, gris-verde de hasta 35 centímetros de largo. Las hojas son de hasta unos 9 centímetros de largo y se componen de varios pares de foliolos ovales a oblongos. La gran inflorescencia tiene hasta 30 flores amarillentas o de color crema, cada una entre 1 y 2 centímetros de largo. El fruto es una legumbre de 2 a 3 centímetros de largo. Es carnosa cuando nueva y se seca a una textura correosa peluda.
Distribución
Es una planta herbácea perennifolia que se encuentra en Estados Unidos, donde se distribuye por California y Nevada.
Taxonomía
Astragalus gibbsii fue descrita por Albert Kellogg y publicado en Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences 2: 161, f. 50. 1863.[1]
- Etimología
Astragalus: nombre genérico derivado del griego clásico άστράγαλος y luego del Latín astrăgălus aplicado ya en la antigüedad, entre otras cosas, a algunas plantas de la familia Fabaceae, debido a la forma cúbica de sus semillas parecidas a un hueso del pie.[2]
gibbsii: epíteto otorgado en honor del botánico Peter Edward Gibbs.
