There is a single specimen at Kew from N.W.F.P. (Harriss 16829) labelled as Secale montanum but since it consists only of the spike its identity cannot be confirmed. The species differs from the others in our area only by its perennial habit.

Tufted greyish-green perennial; culms up to 100 cm high, erect or geniculately ascending. Leaf-blades flat or rolled, up to 15 cm long, 2-8 mm wide, glabrous or scaberulous. Spike 4-8(-11) cm long (excluding the awns); rhachis very fragile, shortly ciliate along the margins. Spikelets 2-flowered; glumes 8-10 mm long, shortly scabrid-ciliate on the keel, acuminate or shortly awned; lemmas 8-13 mm long, with an awn 0.2-2.5 cm long.

Secale montanum, wild perennial rye, is a species in the rye genus Secale native to the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Caucasus region, and eastwards through Iran to Pakistan.^[2] It is a short-lived, self-fertile perennial. It is thought to be the ultimate parent of domesticated rye (Secale cereale), and crosses with S. cereale have had some success in creating fodder cultivars.^[3]^[4] Some authorities consider the synonym Secale strictum C.Presl. to have priority.^[5]

Enligt Catalogue of Life^[2]^[3] ingår vildråg i släktet rågsläktet och familjen gräs, men enligt Dyntaxa^[4] är tillhörigheten istället släktet rågsläktet och familjen gräs. Arten har ej påträffats i Sverige.^[4] Inga underarter finns listade i Catalogue of Life.^[2]

Vildrågen gav upphov till sädesslaget råg (Secale cereale) via Vavilovs mimikry^[5].
