A glabrous shrub, 1.5-3 m. high, or sometimes a small tree, the branches brownish or grayish-brown, straight or somewhat flexuous, unarmed or armed, the prickles inserted in pairs or rarely solitary at the bases of the petioles, or on the rachis at the base of the leaflets, occasionally on the midrib on the back of the leaflets ; leaves odd-pinnate, or sometimes equally-pinnate; petioles and rachis winged, or wingless; leaflets 3-7, opposite, sessile, narrowly to broadly obovate, 0.8-2.8 cm. long, 0.5-1.9 cm. broad, obtuse, rounded, or emarginate at the apex, cuneate or occasionally somewhat rounded at the base, nearly equilateral, rigid, entire, above shining, paler and rather dull beneath, the margin often recurved; glands of the lower surface brownish or blackish, more or less impressed; panicles lateral and sometimes terminal, mostly 1 or 2 cm. long ; staminate flowers : calyx about 1 mm. broad ; sepals 3, triangular to nearly orbicular, subacute to rounded at the apex, denticulate or entire ; petals 3, imbricate at flowering time, erect-spreading, elliptic to oval, sometimes ovate to obovate, 1.8-2 mm. long, 1-1.4 mm. broad; stamens 3 ; filaments longer than the petals ; anthers ovate or oval ; ovary rudimentary ; style subulate ; stigma wanting; pistillate flowers: staminodes well-developed ; gynophore disk-shaped, crenulate; gynoecium 1-carpellary ; style at first reflexed, at length straightening ; stigma convex, suboblique ; carpels nearly round, compressed, keeled, impressed-punctate ; follicles globose or subglobose, sessile, 3-4 mm. long, obliquely apiculate, dehiscing to the base, slightly wrinkled ; seed subglobose, nearly terete, black, shining, 2.2-3 mm. long, 2-3 mm. broad.
