Rhamnus crocea (englisch spiny redberry) ist eine Pflanzenart aus der Familie der Kreuzdorngewächse. Sie ist im Südwesten der Vereinigten Staaten beheimatet.
Rhamnus crocea ist ein immergrüner Strauch von bis zu zwei Metern Höhe.[1] Er kommt normalerweise im Chaparral vor; typische Begleitarten sind Heteromeles arbutifolia und Prunus ilicifolia.[2]
Rhamnus crocea bedeckt zwei wichtige Gebirgsausläufer. In Kalifornien umgibt er das gesamte San Joaquin Valley, die Bergketten an der Pazifikküste und die westlichen Ausläufer der Sierra Nevada. In Arizona findet man ihn auf der gesamten Strecke von der Mogollon Rim bis zur westlichen Region der White Mountains.[3]

Die Früchte von Rhamnus crocea wurden durch die Indianer im Westen der Vereinigten Staaten gegessen. In großen Mengen gegessen sollen die Früchte zu einer Rötung der gesamten Haut führen.[5]

This evergreen shrub, Rhamnus crocea, is typically one to two meters in height.[2] R. crocea typically occurs in chaparral, with common flora associates being toyon and hollyleaf cherry.[3]
Rhamnus crocea covers two major mountain foothills. In California, it surrounds the entire San Joaquin Valley, the pacific coast ranges and the western foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. In Arizona, it is found in the entire length of the Mogollon Rim to the western region of the White Mountains.[4]
The fruit of Rhamnus crocea was used as food by Native Americans in the Western United States.[5] When eaten in large quantities, the berry is reported to impart a red tint to the entire body of the consumer.[5]
