Sphenacanthid acantharea with similar spicules; spicules with 2-4 cross-shaped extensions or 5-6 angular plates connecting to form a shell; conical bases of spicules link together and form a central structure; inner cytoplasm yellow or red and is surrounded by a capsular wall; ectoplasm with numerous zooxanthellae; periplasmic cortical plates linked to spicules by 6-16 myonemes. Eleven genera, thirty-five species.
