Der Indische Wasserstern (Hygrophila difformis) ist eine Sumpfpflanze aus der Familie der Akanthusgewächse (Acanthaceae). Wie der Riesen-Wasserfreund und der Indische Wasserfreund spielt er eine Rolle in der Aquaristik. Nicht verwandt ist er mit der Gattung der Wassersterne (Callitriche).
Der Indische Wasserstern bildet hellgrüne, stark gefiederte Unterwasserblätter aus. Die Blätter sind kurz gestielt und stehen kreuzweise gegenständig. Die Sproßlänge kann unter Wasser bis zu 50 Zentimeter betragen. Die Blattgröße kann bis zu 15 Zentimeter Länge und zwischen 4,5 und 6,5 Zentimeter sein. Die bis zu fünf Millimeter starken Stängel sind behaart und von grüner oder rötlicher Farbe.
Heimisch ist der Indische Wasserstern in Indien, Birma, Thailand und auf der malaiischen Halbinsel. Sie wächst in ihrem Verbreitungsgebiet bevorzugt an sumpfigen Standorten.
Unter Aquarianern zählt der Indische Wasserstern, auch Wasserwedel oder Wasserwistarie genannt, zu den empfehlenswertesten Aquarienpflanzen. Er hat den Vorteil, eine einfach zu pflegende und schnellwüchsige Pflanze zu sein. Die Vermehrung ist einfach. Sie kann durch Kopfstecklinge und die Auspflanzung von abgeschnittenen Seitentrieben erfolgen. Sie benötigt anders als der Indische Wasserfreund jedoch eine sehr gute Beleuchtung. Sie hat außerdem eine große Toleranz gegenüber dem pH-Wert des Wassers. Die optimale Wassertemperatur liegt zwischen 22 und 26 Grad Celsius.
Da diese Art weit verbreitet ist und keinerlei Bedrohungen bekannt sind, stuft die IUCN diese Art als Least Concern (gering gefährdet) ein.[1]

Water wisteria is easy to grow and as such it is a very popular plant for the tropical aquarium. It grows best in good light with a nutrient rich water and substrate and it benefits from additional CO2. It can be easily propagated from cuttings.
