Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, the brown ear tick,[1] is a hard tick[2] found in Africa where it spreads the parasite Theileria parva, the cause of East Coast fever in cattle.[3] The tick has a three-host life-cycle, spending around 10% of its life feeding on animals.[2] The most common host species include buffalo, cattle, and large antelope,[2] but R. appendiculatus is also found on other animals, such as hares, dogs, and warthogs.[4]
Rhipicephalus appendiculatus is found in the center, east and south-east of Africa,[4] in areas with at least 24 in (610 mm) of rainfall each year.[2]
R. appendiculatus is 1.8 to 4.4 mm (0.071 to 0.173 in) long, and is a dark reddish-brown or brown color.[1]

Kahverengi kulak kenesi (Rhipicephalus appendiculatus), yaz kenesigiller (Ixodidae) familyasından kene türüdür.
Erginleri konakçının yalnızca kulaklarına saldırır. Nimfleri kulak, baş ve bacaklara, larvalar ise baş ve bacaklarda bulunur. Bir konakçıda yüksek sayıda (1000 ergin ve birkaç bin larva ve nimf) bulunurlar. Erginleri yağmur mevsiminde aktifken, larva ve nimfleri kurak mevsimde hareketlenir. Dişiler 3000-5000 yumurta döker. Yılda 3 nesil verir. Erkek, kahverengimsi, kırmızımsı kahverengi ya da çok koyu olabilir. Ayakları kırmızımsı kahverengidir. Dişi, biraz daha koyu kahverengidir.
Üç konaklı kenedir. Büyük ve küçük memelilerde, özellikle sığır, Afrika mandası ve antiloplarda asalaktır. Larva ve nimfleri küçük antilop, etçil ve tavşanlarda görülür.
Hayvan sağlığında gerçekten "baş belasıdır". Sığırlardaki Doğu Kıyısı hummasının (Theileria parva) birincil taşıyıcısıdır ve % 90 il'a 100 arası ölüm getirir. Yüksek sayıda bulunduklarından kansızlık (anemi) yaparlar. Ayrıca Nairobi Sığır Hastalığı Virüsü ile Thogoto virüsünün de taşıyıcısıdır.
Afrika'da nispeten gölgeli, çalı gibi serin veya ağaçsı savana veya ormanlık alanlarda yayılım gösterir: Sudan, Uganda, Ruanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzanya, Zaire, Zambiya, Malavi, Zimbabve, Mozambik, Botsvana, Güney Afrika Cumhuriyeti, Mauritius.
