Onustus is a genus of large sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Xenophoridae, the carrier shells.[1]
Shells medium-sized to large (diameter of base without attachments 80–160 mm; height of shell 42–100 mm), thin-shelled, with wide peripheral flange, simple or weakly digitate, porcellanous ventrally. Umbilicus narrow to wide, sometimes plugged with callus. Foreign objects attached to periphery on few to all whorls, usually small and inconspicuous, leaving most of the shell surface exposed.[2]

Onustus (no século XX colocados no gênero Tugurium[1][3] e Trochotugurium) é um gênero de moluscos gastrópodes marinhos pertencente à família Xenophoridae. Foi classificado por William John Swainson, em 1840, na obra A Treatise on Malacology or Shells and Shell-fish[1]; com Onustus indicus (Gmelin, 1791) sendo a espécie-tipo.[2] Sua distribuição geográfica abrange os mares tropicais, entre o mar do Caribe e o Indo-Pacífico[3], incluindo a costa do Brasil.[2]
Ao contrário de Xenophora, que é toda revestida de objetos, as espécies do gênero Onustus geralmente são dotadas de umbílico e aderem pequenas pedras ou grãos de areia às suas primeiras voltas, geralmente deixando as últimas sem objetos, com uma aba ao redor de sua base.[4] Algumas espécies, como Onustus caribaeus, apresentam objetos como conchas em sua aba externa.[5][6]
