Amphidromous. Refers to fishes that regularly migrate between freshwater and the sea (in both directions), but not for the purpose of breeding, as in anadromous and catadromous species. Sub-division of diadromous. Migrations should be cyclical and predictable and cover more than 100 km.Characteristic elements in amphidromy are: reproduction in fresh water, passage to sea by newly hatched larvae, a period of feeding and growing at sea usually a few months long, return to fresh water of well-grown juveniles, a further period of feeding and growing in fresh water, followed by reproduction there (Ref. 82692).

Inhabits shallow coastal waters in open sandy and surf areas, seagrass beds, near reefs, and mangrove channels (Ref. 7251). Enters brackishwater, sometimes even freshwater (Ref. 3722). May occur in small aggregations (Ref. 3722). Often seen feeding in sand patches among reefs by thrusting its mouth into the sediment and expelling sand from the gill openings (Ref. 13442). Feeds on benthic invertebrates such as worms, clams, crustaceans (Ref. 3722); Mobile invertebrates feeder (Ref. 57616).

Gerres cinereus és una espècie de peix pertanyent a la família dels gerrèids.[5]

Descripció

  • Fa 41 cm de llargària màxima (normalment, en fa 30) i 530 g de pes.
  • És de color platejat amb les aletes pèlviques grogues.[6][7][8][9]

Alimentació

Menja invertebrats bentònics (com ara, cucs, cloïsses i crustacis) i insectes.[10][11]

Depredadors

És depredat pel mero de Nassau (Epinephelus striatus).[12]

Hàbitat

És un peix marí i d'aigua dolça, associat als esculls i de clima subtropical (32°N - 23°S) que viu entre 1-15 m de fondària.[6][13][14]

Distribució geogràfica

Es troba a l'Atlàntic occidental (des de Bermuda, Florida, les Bahames i el nord del Golf de Mèxic fins a Rio de Janeiro -el Brasil-, incloent-hi el mar Carib i les Antilles) i el Pacífic oriental (des de Mèxic fins al Perú, incloent-hi les illes Galápagos).[6][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47]

Ús comercial

Es comercialitza fresc, tot i que no és gaire apreciat. També és emprat per elaborar farina de peix.[48]

Observacions

N'hi ha informes d'enverinament per ciguatera.[49]
