This species is distinguished by the following characters: body moderately deep; greatest depth 2.5-3.0 in SL; preopercular notch and knob poorly developed; vomerine tooth patch triangular, with a medial posterior extension; gill rakers of first gill arch 6-7 + 10-14 - 16-21; caudal fin truncate to slightly emarginate; scale rows on back parallel to lateral line. Colour of back and upper sides dark brown, lower sides and belly whitish with a silver sheen; usually a series of 4-5 narrow yellow stripes on the sides below the lateral line; a distinct round, black spot on the back below the posterior part of the spinous portion of the dorsal fin (Ref. 9821, 90102).Description: Dorsal profile of head moderately sloped; preorbital bone very narrow, its width about half of eye diameter (Ref. 90102).

Adults inhabit very shallow coastal habitats, often in large schools near freshwater run-offs (Ref. 48635). Juveniles often intertidal (Ref. 48635); over sand, silt, or coral rubble bottoms, occasionally in mangrove-lined streams and estuaries (Ref. 9821) They may enter freshwater to feed (Ref. 245); on small fish and invertebrates (Ref. 5213). This is a small species commonly utilized in subsistence fisheries and also seen in markets. Caught mainly with handlines, traps, and gill nets and are marketed mostly fresh (Ref. 9821).

體長橢圓形，背緣呈弧狀彎曲。兩眼間隔平坦。前鰓蓋缺刻不顯著。鰓耙數17-21。上下頜兩側具尖齒，外列齒較大；上頜前端具犬齒數顆；下頜前端則為排列疏鬆之圓錐狀齒；鋤骨齒帶三角形，其後方具有突出部；腭骨亦具絨毛狀齒；舌面無齒。體被中大櫛鱗，頰部及鰓蓋具多列鱗；背鰭、臀鰭和尾鰭基部大部分亦被細鱗；側線上方前半部的鱗片排列與側線平行。背鰭軟硬鰭條部間無明顯深刻；臀鰭基底短而與背鰭軟條部相對；背鰭硬棘X，軟條13-14；臀鰭硬棘III，軟條7-9；胸鰭長，末端達臀鰭起點；尾鰭叉形。體銀白色而帶有黃色光澤，體側另有7-8條與體軸平行之黃褐色細縱帶；背鰭硬棘部與軟條部相接處下方具一大黑斑。各鰭黃色；腹鰭淡色。

Die Swartkol-snapper (Lutjanus ehrenbergii) is 'n vis wat voorkom in die westelike Stille Oseaan, die Indiese Oseaan; die Rooisee en aan die ooskus van Afrika suidwaarts tot by die noorde van KwaZulu-Natal. In Engels staan die vis bekend as die Blackspot snapper; in sommige plekke as die Ehrenberg's seaperch.
Identifikasie
Die vis word tot 35 cm lank. Dit is grys tot silwer met vyf nou, geel strepe onder die sylyn. Die stert- en analevinne is gelerig. Daar is 'n groot ovaalvormige swart kol op die sylyn onder die middel dorsalevin. Die kol kan verdwyn met ouderdom.
Die vis leef in strandmere en aflandige riwwe in water wat 5 tot 60 m diep is. Hulle verkies hellings van die riwwe waar hulle skuil onder oorhange en in grotte. Die vis is 'n alleenloper maar kom ook in klein groepies voor, soms saam met ander snapperspesies. Hulle vreet klein vissies wat hulle hoofsaaklik snags vang.
Die vis lyk baie soos die dorie-snapper (Lutjanus fulviflamma).
