體長橢圓形，側扁而略高，標準體長為體高之2.8-3.0倍。頭背部略為弧形；眶間區平坦。眼稍大，長於或等於吻長。口大；上下頜前端具小犬齒。鰓耙數5-6+10-11，隨成長而漸退化。前鰓蓋骨下緣具二枚前向棘。體被細小櫛鱗，主上頜骨及頤部無鱗；側線完整，側線鱗孔數30-35，側線上鱗列數3。背鰭鰭棘部與軟條部相連，具缺刻，具硬棘X，軟條16-18，第IV或V棘最長；臀鰭硬棘III枚，軟條7；腹鰭腹位，末端延伸不及肛門開口；胸鰭延長，中央之鰭條長於上下方之鰭條，鰭條 14-15，部份鰭條有分支；尾鰭內凹形。體淡粉紅色，體側沿著側線上下各具一列暗紅色班塊，上列有8個，下列有5個。以前所記載之中州花鱸(/Plectranthias chungchowensis/)為本種之同種異名。

Plectranthias whiteheadi, Whitehead's basslet, is a species of fish in the family Serranidae occurring in the Western Pacific. Little is known about this relatively small species which maximum length is about 7.8 cm SL.^[2]

IUCN has evaluated Plectranthias chungchowensis,^[1] but this species, described as endemic to Taiwan, is a junior synonym of P. whiteheadi.^[2]

Size

This species reaches a length of 7.7 cm (3.0 in).^[2]

Etymology

The fish is namedin honor of ichthyologist Peter J. P. Whitehead (1930-1993), of the British Museum of Natural History.^[3]
