Body oblong, fusiform, and somewhat compressed (its depth contained 2.7 to 3.0 times in standard length); mouth small, terminal, and oblique, its posterior end surpassing the anterior rim of the eye; lower jaw protruding; eyes very large; first gill arch with 22 to 26 gill rakers; dorsal fin deeply notched, with 12 spines and 17 to 19 soft rays (XII, 17-19); second anal spine shorter than third; back brownish green; flanks silvery with golden highlights and 5 or 6 golden yellow longitudinal stripes; upper edge of operculum with a dark spot; caudal peduncle with a dark spot (Ref. 55763).

Xenichthys xanti és una espècie de peix pertanyent a la família dels hemúlids [3] que habita des del sud del golf de Califòrnia fins al Perú (Pacífic oriental).[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] Pot arribar a fer 24 cm de llargària màxima (normalment, en fa 18). Cos oblong, fusiforme i una mica comprimit. Boca petita, terminal i obliqua. Mandíbula inferior sortint. Ulls molt grossos. Aleta dorsal molt dentada i amb 12 espines i 17-19 radis tous. Té el dors de color verd marronós i els flancs argentats amb reflexos daurats i 5 o 6 franges longitudinals grogues.[4][13] És un peix marí, demersal i de clima tropical.[4] És inofensiu per als humans.[4]

Vissen Xenichthys xanti is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van grombaarzen (Haemulidae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1863 door Gill.
De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als niet bedreigd, beoordelingsjaar 2007.[1]
