The bank butterflyfish (Prognathodes aya) is a species of marine ray-finned fish, a butterflyfish belonging to the family Chaetodontidae. It is found in tropical and sub-tropical waters of the western Atlantic Ocean.
The Bank butterflyfish is silvery white to tan in color, with yellow on all fins except the pectoral fins.[3][4] It also has two sub-vertical dark, brownish, bars: the first on its eyes, following the profile of the face and snout; the second begins at the back of the dorsal fin and extends downward near the tail but does not appear on the caudal fin.[3][4] There is also a yellow band located behind the second dark bar that extends from the fifth spine of the dorsal fin, down to the back of the anal fin. [4]
The Bank butterflyfish is uncommon throughout its range. It is found on natural and artificial reefs in Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and off the Yucatán Peninsula. It is also found as far north as North Carolina, though it only rarely appears that far north.[4]
In regard to conservation, the Bank butterflyfish is not known to be threatened in any way and is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.[1] Though it is harvested for use in salt water aquaria, this commercial use does not appear to negatively impact the global population of the species.[1] The Bank butterflyfish is also not protected by name in any specific legislation, though it is known to inhabit a number of protected areas.[1]
When observed by scuba divers this fish is generally regarded as shy, and it is known to dart into the shelter of reefs upon approach.[3] Once properly sheltered, however, some fish will remain at the entrance to whatever crevice they are using, apparently to watch divers.[3]

Prognathodes aya is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van koraalvlinders (Chaetodontidae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1886 door Jordan.
De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als niet bedreigd, beoordelingsjaar 2009.[1]

P. aya phổ biến ở tây Đại Tây Dương, được ghi nhận tại bang Florida (Hoa Kỳ), băng qua vịnh Mexico đến vịnh Campeche. P. aya được báo cáo là một loài lang thang ở đảo Cape Hatteras (bang Bắc Carolina, Hoa Kỳ). Chúng thường sống xung quanh các rạn san hô và những bãi đá ngầm, ở độ sâu khoảng 20 đến 200 m nhưng thường sống ở sâu hơn (45 – 200 m)[1][2].
P. aya trưởng thành dài khoảng 15 cm. Thân thường có màu trắng hoặc vàng trắng. Một dải màu đen chạy từ mõm lên vây lưng, băng qua mắt. Một dải rộng hơn trải dài từ giữa vâ lưng đến vây hậu môn. Tất cả các vây thường có màu vàng tươi. Mõm nhọn[2][3].

Thức ăn của P. aya chủ yếu là các loại động vật không xương sống tầng đáy và rong tảo. P. aya trưởng thành có thể sống đơn độc hoặc bơi thành cặp vào mùa sinh sản[1][2].
P. aya hiếm khi được đánh bắt để phục vụ cho ngành thương mại cá cảnh vì chúng khó đánh bắt dưới vùng nước sâu[1].

本魚體側扁，吻突出，體略呈三角形，體色為銀白色，側線明顯，鰓蓋略呈銀藍色，有一條褐色斜條紋穿過眼部；另有一寬的深色橫帶從背鰭硬棘基部傾斜向下至臀鰭軟條部，腹鰭、臀鰭和背鰭軟條部及尾鰭為黃色，背鰭硬棘12至14枚、背鰭軟條17至20枚；臀鰭硬棘3枚、臀鰭軟條14至16枚。體長可達15公分。
本魚棲息於較深的珊瑚礁繁盛的礁石與峭壁，少見。
為觀賞魚，不供食用。
