Characterized by whitish body color; head and side with six brown to reddish bars and irregular brown blotches in pale spaces in between; four branched main body bars on lower side; red blotch on lower cheek just behind mouth; red or orange spots on head, dark-edged; separate pelvic fins, joined by low membrane at base of fins; without median predorsal scales or only few embedded scales just in front of first dorsal fin; longitudinal scale series 80-85; greatest depth of body 4.6-6.4 in SL; caudal fin longer than head, 2.8-3.4 in SL (Ref. 90102).

26~28。標準體長為頭長的3.2倍，魚體高的5.5倍。頭長為吻長的2.1倍；為眼徑的5.0倍；眼間距的5.6倍。體延長，魚體前部分呈圓筒狀，後部側扁。頭部與頸部無鱗。體呈棕黃色，體具5條深棕色寬橫帶，向下而略向前斜，且橫帶邊緣糢糊不清晰，中央有些斷裂而不連續，第一條位於眼後項部延伸至鰓蓋下方，第二條至第五條寬大，分別位於第一和第二背鰭下方；橫帶間散布一些不規則小斑，有時延伸至腹側；頭部及第一、第二背鰭具許多淺藍色緣的橘色亮斑；鰓蓋後上方及口角處各具1個小棕斑。胸鰭透明無色；臀鰭灰褐色，具2條橘紅色縱線紋，兩條線紋間有一個深色長斑：腹鰭灰褐色；尾鰭灰白色，具橙褐色C形斑紋。(林上智、林沛立編寫

Amblyeleotris periophthalma, the broad-banded shrimp goby or the periophthalma shrimp goby, is a marine benthic species of goby native to reef environments of the Indo-West Pacific, Red Sea included.[2]
Description
A. periophthalma is a small fish which can be up to 8 centimetres (3.1 in). Its body is lengthened and cylindrical. The background coloration is whitish and banded with large brown stripes whose color intensity varies from an individual to another. A multitude of small brownish dots are distributed mainly on the superior part of the body. Eyes are round and prominent. The mouth is big and in the shape of an inverted "U".[3][4]
Habitat
A. periophthalma can be found on sandy substrates in lagoons or on external reef slopes at depths of from 3 to 35 metres (9.8 to 114.8 ft), though mostly between 10 to 20 m (33 to 66 ft).[2]
Behaviour
A. periophthalma lives in symbiosis with alpheid shrimps in burrows. The shrimps dig and maintain the burrows which are the dens for both animals. The goby is like a watchman that warns in case of potential danger which benefits the shrimp because it has poor vision.[4]
Feeding
A. periophthalma has a carnivorous diet and usually eats small crustaceans or small fishes passing close to its burrow.

Amblyeleotris periophthalma est un poisson marin benthique qui appartient à la famille des Gobies à crevette. Son nom courant est Gobie périophthalme.
Description
Amblyeleotris periophthalma est un poisson de petite taille, 8 cm maximum. Son corps est allongé et cylindrique. La teinte de fonds du corps est blanchâtre et ce dernier est rayé de larges bandes brunes dont l'intensité varie d'un individu à l'autre. Une multitude de tâches de la même couleur que les bandes constelle plus particulièrement la partie supérieure du corps[1],[2]. Les yeux sont ronds et proéminents. La bouche est grande et en forme de "U" inversé.
Distribution
Amblyeleotris periophthalma est présent dans les eaux tropicales de la zone Indo-Ouest Pacifique, Mer Rouge incluse[3],[1].
Habitat
Cette espèce de Gobie a une préférence marquée pour les fonds meubles de type sablonneux des lagons ou des pentes externes de récifs afin de pouvoir creuser un terrier avec l'aide d'une crevette[4].
Alimentation
Amblyeleotris periophthalma est carnivore et capture des petits crustacés[1].
Comportement
Amblyeleotris periophthalma vit en symbiose en général avec des crevettes du genre Alpheidae. Au sein de cette association, la crevette creuse et entretien le terrier et le poisson guette les dangers potentiels car la crevette à une faible vue qui ne lui permet pas de détecter les prédateurs. La communication s'effectue par un contact permanent entre une antenne de la crevette sur la partie postérieure du Gobie. Un mouvement particulier de sa queue et le signal de repli est communiqué à la crevette[2].
