體延長,側扁。頭延長,吻部圓,吻長較眼徑長。眼小。口極大且能擴張。前頜骨及上頜骨細長;上下頜骨具絨毛齒帶。體裸露無鱗;側線上下各具數列小棘。背鰭2個,第一背鰭較小,具硬棘X-XI;第二背鰭基底長,具軟條26-28;臀鰭與第二背鰭相對,具硬棘I,軟條26-28;胸鰭稍長,但末端未達第二背鰭基底起始點下方;尾鰭叉形。體一致為黑褐色或黑色。

Dysalotus alcocki és una espècie de peix de la família dels quiasmodòntids i de l'ordre dels perciformes.[5]
Descripció
El cos, allargat, fa 22,5 cm de llargària màxima. 10-11 espines i 26-28 radis tous a les dues aletes dorsals i 1 espina i 26-28 radis tous a l'anal. Aletes pectorals amb 11-13 radis tous i pelvianes amb 1 espina i 5 radis tous. Línia lateral no interrompuda.[6][7]
Alimentació
El seu nivell tròfic és de 3,46.[8]
Hàbitat i distribució geogràfica
És un peix marí, batipelàgic (entre 0 i 2.100 m de fondària,[9] normalment a partir dels 1.000),[10] oceanòdrom[11] i de clima tropical, el qual viu a les aigües tropicals i subtropicals dels oceans Atlàntic[12] (incloent-hi el corrent de les Illes Canàries),[13] Índic[14] i Pacífic[15][16] (incloent-hi el mar de la Xina Meridional)[17] entre 35°N-11°S i 75°W-137°W: Cap Verd,[18][19] les illes Hawaii[9][20] i Papua Nova Guinea.[21][22][23][3][7][24]
Observacions
És inofensiu per als humans[7] i el seu índex de vulnerabilitat és de baix a moderat (34 de 100).[25]

Dysalotus alcocki is a species of deep sea fish, a swallower, from the family Chiasmodontidae which is found in the tropical and temperate oceans around the world. The adults fed mainly on fish.[3] The juveniles and larvae are most frequently recorded from shallower waters[1] while adults are mostly caught from depths of over 1,000 metres (3,300 ft).[2] The generic name is derived from the Greek dysalotos which means "difficult to catch"[2] and the specific name honours the English zoologist Alfred William Alcock (1859-1933).[4]

Known from relatively few, widely scattered localities from the Sargasso Sea to equatorial Pacific at 137°16'W.
