Plectroglyphidodon dickii (Liénard 1839)

Die Smalbalk-nooientjie (Plectroglyphidodon dickii) is 'n vis wat wydverspeid voorkom in die westelike Stille Oseaan, die Indiese Oseaan en aan die kus van Oos-Afrika suidwaarts tot die suide van KwaZulu-Natal. In Engels staan die vis bekend as die Narrowbar damsel.

Identifikasie

Die vis word tot 11cm lank en sy lyf is taankleurig terwyl die rante van die skubbe donker is. Daar is 'n vertikale swart streep net voor die basis va die stertvin. Die volwasse visse het 'n geel stertvin terwyl die onvolwasse s'n wit is. Hulle leef in rots kus areas en vlak aflandige riwwe in water wat 2 tot 18m diep is. Hulle is alleenlopers maar kan ook in klein groepies voorkom. Die visse is territoriaal van aard en vreet alge en klein bodem ongewerweldes.

Die vis kan verwar word met die breëbalk-nooientjie (Plectroglyphidodon johnstonianus).

Plectroglyphidodon dickii, common name blackbar devil, Dick's damsel or narrowbar damselfish, is a species of damselfish in the family Pomacentridae.^[2] This species was formerly classified as Dascyllus aruanus, but recently the populations of western Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean have been split off.^[3]

Etymology

The genus epithet Plectroglyphidodon derives from the Greek words plektron (meaning = anything to strike with, spur), plus the suffixes glyphis (mening carved) and odous (meaning teeth).^[4]

Distribution

This species is present in the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to the Line Islands and Tuamotu, north to Japan, south to Australia and east to French Polynesia.^[4][5]

Habitat

These tropical marine reef-associated damselfishes occur in shallow coral reefs, especially with branching corals, in areas of high wave action, in clear waters lagoons and seaward reefs, at depths of 1 to 15 m. They are commonly present with Pocillopora or Acropora corals.^[4][5][6][7]

Description

Plectroglyphidodon dickii can reach a body length of about 9–11 cm (3.5–4.3 in). These damsefishes have a compact and stocky body, with 12 dorsal spines, 16-18 dorsal soft rays, 2 anal spines and 14-16 anal soft rays.^[4] The background coloring is mainly light brown with very visible scales and a small vertical black bar crossing the rear of the body, just ahead of the caudal area. The eyes show light blue rings and light purple markings. The dorsal, pectoral and pelvic fins are yellow orange or light brown, while the caudal fin is white, more rarely orange, with a transparent blue shaded fringe on the rear. The operculum sometimes shows a purplish tinge. Also the caudal peduncle can be white or orange.^[5][8]

Biology

These damselfishes usually live in groups, but they are often encountered as solitary and highly territorial individuals. They commonly feed on filamentous algae, benthic small invertebrates and sometimes on small fishes.^[5] They are oviparous. Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate, always protected and aerated by the male.^[4][6]
