體呈卵圓形而側扁，標準體長為體高之
1.7-2.0倍。眼中大，上側位。口小，上頜骨末端僅及眼前緣；齒細小，圓錐狀。眶下骨裸出；前鰓蓋骨後緣平滑。體被大櫛鱗；側線之有孔鱗片14-16個。背鰭單一，軟條部延長而呈尖形，硬棘XII，軟條12-14；臀鰭硬棘II，軟條11-14；胸鰭鰭條15-17；尾鰭深叉形，上下葉末端延長如絲，各具2條硬棘狀鰭條。體呈橘褐色至暗褐色；腹側色淡。虹膜黃色，背、腹側黑色。背鰭及臀鰭呈褐色；背、臀鰭軟條部後半部呈淡色；胸鰭基部上緣有一小三角形黑斑；尾鰭前半偏黃，後半色淡，基底以及尾柄之背、腹面黑色。

棲地

主要棲息於水深10至20公尺且珊瑚繁生之礁石斜面旁。通常呈小群出現，但亦有單獨出現者。以藻類及浮游生物為主食。

Morfologia
Els mascles poden assolir els 9 cm de longitud total.[2]
Distribució geogràfica
Es troba des de l'Illa Christmas i el nord-oest d'Austràlia fins a Kiribati i sud del Japó. També a Tonga.[2]

Pycnochromis atripes, the dark-fin chromis, is a diurnal species of damselfish belonging to the genus Pycnochromis. It can be found in the Western Pacific Ocean in Christmas Islands and in north-western Australia in the East Indian Ocean to Kiribati, and north to Southern Japan. It can also be found in Tonga.[2] It inhabits areas of outer reef and slopes which are rich in coral, appearing singly or in small groups near the bottom. It is oviparous, and the males of the species guard and aerate the eggs.[2]>

分布
本魚分布於東印度西太平洋區，包括聖誕島、羅得豪島、萬那杜、日本、台灣、澳洲、新喀里多尼亞、菲律賓、印尼、密克羅尼西亞、帛琉等海域。
深度
水深2至40公尺。
特徵
本魚體呈均勻的淡褐色，尾柄上下緣及尾鰭上下邊緣黑色。體呈卵圓形而側扁，眼中大，上側位。口小，上頜骨末端僅及眼前緣；齒細小，圓錐狀。尾鰭叉形，上下葉延長，其間有個新月形黃斑在尾鰭基部。背鰭、臀鰭鰭條部的前半部顏色較深。眼睛內有一相當於眼徑的黑橫紋，胸鰭基底上方亦有一小黑斑。背鰭硬棘12枚；軟條12枚；臀鰭硬棘2枚；軟條12枚。體長可達10公分。
生態
本魚棲息在岩礁斜坡上富含珊瑚礁的區域，在接近底層處活動，大多獨行。以動物性浮游生物及藻類為食。
經濟利用
體型較大的魚可食用，油炸使骨酥，則味美，亦可觀賞用。
