Occur in shallow waters, most commonly in areas of mangrove development and shallow embayments. Often seen scraping algae from lava rocks or browsing on filamentous algae (Ref. 28023). Oviparous, eggs are pelagic and non-adhesive (Ref. 205). More data needed. Probably caught incidentally with other mullets.

Mugil thoburni, Thoburn's mullet, is a species of grey mullet, from the family Mugilidae, found in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It is most common around the Galapagos Islands but does occur on the coasts of Central America and South America as well. This species grows to a length of 29.5 centimetres (11.6 in) TL. It was formerly regarded as the only known member of the genus Xenomugil.[1]

The specific name honours Wilbur Wilson Thoburn (1859-1899), lecturer in bionomics at Stanford University, where David Starr Jordan was president, in recognition of Thoburn's work on the sculpins.[2]

Mugil thoburni, Thoburn's mullet, is a species of grey mullet, from the family Mugilidae, found in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It is most common around the Galapagos Islands but does occur on the coasts of Central America and South America as well. This species grows to a length of 29.5 centimetres (11.6 in) TL. It was formerly regarded as the only known member of the genus Xenomugil.

The specific name honours Wilbur Wilson Thoburn (1859-1899), lecturer in bionomics at Stanford University, where David Starr Jordan was president, in recognition of Thoburn's work on the sculpins.

La lisa agugú (Xenomugil thoburni)[3]​ es una especie de pez actinopeterigio marino,[4]​ la única del género monotípico Xenomugil, de la familia de los mugílidos.[5]​

Biología

La longitud máxima descrita fue de 29,5 cm.[4]​ Son peces ovíparos, los huevos son pelágicos y no adhesivos.[6]​ Probablemente atrapados incidentalmente con otros mugílidos con los que conviven.[4]​

Distribución y hábitat

Se distribuye por la costa este central del océano Pacífico, especialmente abundante en las islas Galápagos, pero también presente en la costa de América desde la frontera entre México con Guatemala al norte hasta Perú al sur.[4]​ Habita en aguas tropicales poco profundas, más comúnmente en áreas de desarrollo de manglares y ensenadas poco profundas, a menudo visto raspando algas de rocas de lava o navegando entre algas filamentosas.[7]​

Xenomugil thoburni is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van harders (Mugilidae).[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1896 door Jordan & Starks.

De soort staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN als niet bedreigd, beoordelingsjaar 2008.[1]
