Barbel as short as 4 1/2 times in SL in small specimens, but as much as 3 times in larger ones, its stem black; tip of barbel long and slender, usually pigmented except a narrow proximal band, the outer edges of the flattened wings, and the distal bulb (rarely almost entirely unpigmented except just proximal to distal bulb); distal end rounded or one side tapering to a short point. Dorsal-fin rays 13–16 (usually 14–16). Photophores in ventral row between pectoral and pelvic fin insertions (PV) 26–29 (usually 27–28). Color of head and body black; no prominent round white spots on head.
In the Atlantic southward from about 21° N to the Cape Verde Is.; Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, Lesser Antilles and western Atlantic to about 8° N; south-western Atlantic at 28° S, 40° W; also in the Eastern Indian and Western Pacific Oceans.

Body moderately long, its depth less than 10 times into SL. Head with short, blunt, ronded snout; lower jaw not longer than upper jaw, not curved strongly upward. Pectoral fin with 5–6 rays, all about equal in length, unbranched distally, and without lumps of luminous tissue; pelvic fins low on body, their insertaion close together near mid-ventral line; bases of dorsal and anal fins about equally long, their origins appraximately opposed; no dorsal adipose fin. Photophores in ventral row between pectoral- and pelvic-fin inseration (PV) 26–29; no pale loop or line on flank; postorbital photophore large, as long as width of eye and approximately triangular in shape; no anterior orbital photophore. No Large patches of luminescent tissue behind eye.

Melanostomias macrophotus is a species of fish of the genus Melanostomias. It is endemic to the Eastern and Western Central Atlantic. It's bathypelagic and can be found in depths of 530 to 945 m (1,739 to 3,100 ft). The longest specimen of the species measured 23.0 cm (9.1 in). The species is black, and has around 14 to 15 dorsal soft rays and 18 anal soft rays. This quite thin and long fish has a dull snout.[2]
