Barbel 5–10 times in SL, its stem pigmented to terminal bulb, incompletely in small specimens; terminal bulb single, ovoid, without filaments, a pair of filaments arising from stem just before bulb. A groove in belly about as long as barbel. Pectoral-fin rays 11–16; pelvic-fin rays 8. Photophores of lateral row evenly spaced, not in pairs, 25–28 in ventral row between pectoral and pelvic fin insertions (PV). Color of head and body black; an irregular row of round, white spots present on sides of body in larger specimens, resembling photophores.

The following brief description diaganoses the subgenus Neostomias (sensu Gibbs et al., 1983), to which E. tetranema belongs. Seven pelvic-fin rays; one long and one rudimentary pectoral-fin ray; barbel with three branches of variable complexity arising together from main stem; stem beyond branches with one or more proximal bulbs and a terminal bulb; ventral body groove extending to PV 9-17; lateral photophores evenly spaced, not in pairs.

És un peix marí i d'aigües profundes.[4]
Distribució geogràfica
Es troba a l'Atlàntic oriental (des de Gibraltar fins a Guinea,[6][7] i des de Namíbia fins a Sud-àfrica) i a l'Atlàntic occidental (des dels Estats Units fins al Golf de Mèxic i, també, al Brasil i entre 13°N-8°N).[4][8][5][9][10]
