Dorsal-fin rays 11. Anal-fin rays 27–30. Pectoral-fin rays 10–11. Vertebrae 42–44, including 19 caudal vertebrae. Gill rakers 6 + 12. Pyloric caeca 6–7 (based on 4 specimens). Peritoneum light with scattered clusters of melanophores, particularly dense in the anterior part of the cavity; vent not bordered by black ring. SL 3.7–4.3 times greater than head length, decreases with growth. Eye diameter greater than width of interorbital distance. SL 5.2–6.6 times greater than body depth. Decreases with growth. Photophores: OVa little lower than VAL; VAV and VAL each 8; anterior 1–2 AC slightly raised; AC 22, including 16–17 above anal fin.
The range of this species is restricted apparently to the waters of southern and southeastern Australia.

The following morphologic description of the genus is based on Parin and Borodulina (1990). Body elongate, vertebrae 42-46. Eye normal. Mouth large, two rows of premaxillary teeth. Branchiostegal rays 13–14. Gill rakers 15–19, typically 16 to 18. Dorsal-fin rays 10–13 (14), Anal-fin rays (25) 27–34. Pectoral-fin rays 9-11. Pelvic-fin rays 7. Pelvic fins far anterior to the dorsal-fin origin. Origin of anal fin below the end of the base of the dorsal fin. Adipose fin present. Photophores: ORB 1, by the anterior margin of the orbit. OP 3. SO 1. BR 9–10. IV 21, 10th slightly raised; VAV 8–9; AC 22–25, of them, 15-19 above the anal fin, anterior 2 may be slightly raised; IC 50–54. OV 9; VAL 8–9, anterior 1 or 2 may be slightly raised; OA 17-18.
Greatest length 148 mm.
Great Australian Bight southwest of Eucla, Western Australia, depth 350–450 fathoms.

És un peix marí, batidemersal i de clima temperat que viu entre 230 i 822 m de fondària a la plataforma i el talús continentals.[5][7]
Es troba des de l'Índic oriental fins al Pacífic occidental: Austràlia.[8][5][9][10]
És inofensiu per als humans.[5]

Polymetme illustris is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van lichtvissen (Phosichthyidae).[1] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1926 door McCulloch.
