Even though deep sea scallops have a high concentration of sensory organs near the edge of the mantle cavity, they only have a relatively simple nervous system. Visceral ganglia near the optic lobes fuse with other ganglia to form a simplistic "visceral brain", which constitutes most of the scallop's nervous system. The concentration of sensory organs allow the scallop to be aware of its surroundings at all times. Most prominent and useful are their row of eyes between the two vavles, which aid in watching for predators. The eyes are usually coblat blue in color and are located on the tip of pallial tentacles. Although their eyes are complete with cornea and lens, they are unable to discern shapes. They can only detect changes in light and movement and react to flashing lights or stripes that move at particular speeds, which resemble speeds of their predators, starfish and whelks. The chemical sensitive pallial tentacles are also able to react to excretions of starfish. When a predator is spotted or the scallop is touched, the scallop quickly propels itself from danger. They can do this by rapidly clapping their two valves together and moving in jerks or darts. Movement occurs through a type of jet propulsion. A jet of water is forced backwards and out through the wings and hinge. The locomotion is mainly powered by the large muscle known as the body or mantle cavity.

Deep sea scallops respond to sight and touch. The scallops' eyes are very developed with corneas and lenses, which serves as their dominant means of interaction. The only time they communicate with other scallops is during reproduction. The sperm stimulate the release of eggs.

After fertilization, P. magellanicus develop into a ciliated larva known as the trochosphere. At this stage, they have cilia near their tops and also have a cilia ring around their middle. Then, the larvae quickly mature to veligers. These planktotrophic larvae are ciliary feeders and float in plankton fields for approximately two or three months. The larvae continue to develop and begin to secrete two valves from their mantle cavity as they reach adulthood. During the first several years of life, scallops rapidly increase in size and bulk. The third to fifth year has the most growth. They increase shell height by fifty to eighty percent and quadruple in body weight. Once adult scallops, they become free swimming.

The deep sea scallop's ctenidia and labial cilia serve as instruments for food collection. There is a ventral and dorsal siphon. Water enters the ventral siphon and a current is maintained to pass through the gill lamellae. Here, the scallop separates food particles from mud and sand according to size. The ctnedia then transport the food particles to the mantle cavity and circulate over many groups of cilia. The particles become covered with mucus and are pushed either toward the mouth or the rejection path, which leaves through the dorsal siphon. The mucus covered food is then carried to the stomach through the esophagus, but first passes through the crystalline style, a gelantinous rotating rod. Here, the food is digested in intracellular food vacoules and waste is removed through the intestines and out through the anus.

Foods eaten include microscopic plants, bacteria and organic particles.

Placopecten magellanicus, Deep Sea Scallops, are native to the Atlanic Ocean and range from Labrador to North Carolina. Labrador is located very near New Foundland on the Eastern coast of Canada. They have now become more dispersed throughout this area as a result of farmers introducing them to varying locations in order to breed them for culinary purposes, but the majority remain in the Northern Atlantic Ocean.

Placopecten magellanicus live in moderately deep water. Populations north of Cape Cod live in shallow water, approximately twenty meters. South of Cape Cod, populations live in deeper water ranging from forty to two-hundred meters. They can only survive in marine environments and prefer the cool water of the Northern Atlantic, which stays around sixty-eight degrees Fahrenheit. While resting, they lie on the sand or mud of the ocean bottom.

Range depth: 20 to 200 m.

Average depth: 40 m.

Deep sea scallops secrete two vavles, which are large, thick, and oval-shaped. This shell is often greater in height than width. The valves are unequal in size, with the lower being almost flat and the upper being convex. Grooves radiate from the hinge towards the shell edge. The upper valve is dark in color, usually red or pinkish brown and sometimes rayed with white, while the lower is lighter and is pinkish white. The shell's inside is a glossy white with a distinctive muscular scar where the soft body attaches. The muscle itself is white or tan in color and has two labial or feeding palps with a mouth in between. The scallop's body is wedge-shaped with a ventrally located foot. The gills or ctenidia are in the mantle cavity and are commonly enlarged and have a complex arrangement. A row of eyes peaks from in between the the valves and are attached to the mantle cavity.

Range length: 10 to 23 cm.

Average length: 15 cm.

Instead of releasing eggs and sperm randomly, scallops stimulate one another to spawn at the same time. The sperm is released first and then enters the food current of other scallops, which causes them to release eggs into the mantle cavity.

By the age of two, P. magellanicus are sexually mature, but do not actively produce eggs until four. The majority of deep sea scallops undergo multiple sex changes during their lifetime. They are known as functionally ambisexual and shelter the ova and sperm in the same gonad, but the two are produced in different areas of the gonad. About four percent are hermaphrodites and carry both an ovary and testis within the mantle cavity. The ovary is a very bright pink when carrying ripe eggs and the cream colored testis lie behind the ovary. The two are fused together and have short ducts with no glands. Eggs are not released in the water, but wait for the sperm in the mantle cavity. Fertilization occurs when the sperm usually meet the eggs near the opening of the mantle cavity. Then, the scallops immediately release the zygotes into the water.

Because Deep Sea Scallops create so many sperm and eggs to ensure numerous offspring, they do not have the energy to take care of the offspring. Also, external fertilization does not allow the parents to keep track of their offspring. They produce too many offspring to differentiate between their own and the hundreds of other offspring in the area.

The shell is large, subcircular, and compressed. The two valves are subequal, hinged dorsally, and meet along the ventral margin, except for a small gap between them near the dorsal hinge line. The right valve rests on the bottom. Radial ribs are present along with concentric lamellae or growth lines. This sculpturing is more prominent on the left valve. The wings on the left valve are nearly equal: the wings on the right valve differ in that the anterior wing contains a byssal notch. The inner surface is lustrous and smooth with distinct adductor muscle and pallial scars (roughened areas may be present due to secretions laid down to repair damage from boring organisms). The adductor muscle scar is located slightly posterior and dorsal to the center of the valves and is slightly larger on the left valve. The left valve is usually reddish-brown in color but may be lavender or yellow; the rigght valve is pale cream or white.

Placopecten magellanicus, previously listed as Pecten tenuicostatus and as Pecten grandis[2] and once referred to as the "giant scallop", common names Atlantic deep-sea scallop, deep sea scallop, North Atlantic sea scallop, American sea scallop, Atlantic sea scallop, or sea scallop,[3] is a commercially important pectinid bivalve mollusk native to the northwest Atlantic Ocean.[4]

Description

The shell has a classic form, with smooth shell and edges, unlike Pecten maximus (common name the "great scallop" or "king scallop") which has flutes and scalloped edges; size is around 80 millimetres (3+14 in), with individuals up to 170 millimetres (6+34 in) in diameter. The shell is generally pinkish-red in color, with striped variegation to darker shades appearing in many individuals. The adductor muscle itself is large, often 30–40 millimetres (1+141+12 in) in diameter. Like all scallops, P. magellanicus has photoreceptive eyes along the edge of the pinkish mantle.[5]

Range and habitat

Placopecten magellanicus is found on the continental shelf of the northwest Atlantic from the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence south to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.[6]

Sea scallops typically occur at depths ranging from 18–110 m, but may also occur in waters as shallow as 2 m in estuaries and embayments along the Maine coast and in Canada. In southern areas, scallops are primarily found at depths between 45 and 75 m, and are less common in shallower water (25–45 m) due to high temperature. Although sea scallops are not common at depths greater than about 110 m, some populations have been found as deep as 384 m, and deep-water populations at 170–180 m have been reported in the Gulf of Maine. Sea scallops often occur in aggregations called beds. Beds may be sporadic (perhaps lasting for a few years) or essentially permanent (e.g., commercial beds supporting the Georges Bank fishery). The highest concentration of many permanent beds appears to correspond to areas of suitable temperatures, food availability, substrate, and where physical oceanographic features such as fronts and gyres may keep larval stages in the vicinity of the spawning population.[6]

Adult sea scallops are generally found on firm sand, gravel, shells, and rock. Other invertebrates associated with scallop beds include sponges, hydroids, anemones, bryozoans, polychaetes, mussels, moon snails, whelks, amphipods, crabs, lobsters, sea stars, sea cucumbers, and tunicates.[6]

Fishery

According to NOAA, the Atlantic sea scallop fishery is healthy, and is harvested at sustainable levels.[7] The federal fishery is managed by NOAA Fisheries and the New England Fishery Management Council. The U.S. Atlantic sea scallop fishery is the largest wild scallop fishery in the world.[8] In 2008, 53.5 million pounds of sea scallop meats worth $370 million were harvested in the United States, with Massachusetts and New Jersey responsible for the majority.[9] In 2018, 58.2 million pounds of sea scallop meats worth $532.9 million were harvested in the United States with Massachusetts responsible for the majority.[10]

Between the 1960s and the mid-1990s, the U.S. federal Atlantic sea scallop fishery declined steadily. In 1994 a new set of management guidelines were implemented including a moratorium on permits, limited days at sea, gear and crew restrictions, and areas closed to fishing. Between 1994 and 2005, the biomass of the U.S. sea scallop population increased by 18-fold on Georges Bank and by 8-fold in the Mid-Atlantic Bight region.[11]

The state of Maine has an inshore (within 3 miles) winter (December - April) scallop fishery that is managed by the Maine Department of Marine Resources.[12] Scallops in Maine inshore waters are harvested by mechanical draggers or by SCUBA divers ("dive caught"). In 2009 low harvest numbers caused the Department of Marine Resources to cut the season short and proposed a series of management measures.[13][14] Entry to the fishery became limited, the season was reduced to 70 days, and the minimum ring size was increased to four inches. Additionally, 13 conservation closures (~20% of coastal Maine waters) were created for the following three fishing seasons.[15] In 2012, the Department of Marine Resources proposed developing a rotational closure system for the fishery, based on a 10-year schedule.[16] This rotational closure system was adopted only in the Zone 2 region of the state fishery. All three zones have different management tools that include limited access areas and in-season targeted closures.[17] Since 2009, both dollar value and landings have gone up for the sea scallop fishery in the state of Maine.[18]

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch lists sea scallops as a "Good Alternative," its second best rating.[19] Greenpeace red listed the Atlantic sea scallop, stating that scallop stocks are being overfished and that the fishing methods used are destroying corals and sponges. According to Greenpeace the fishery of scallops kills nearly 1,000 loggerhead sea turtles every year.[20] Since 2015, chain mats and Turtle Deflector Dredges (TDDs) have been added to offshore equipment to reduce sea turtle deaths.[21] This has caused a significant reduction in sea turtles getting caught in harvesting gear.

Le pétoncle géant[1] (ou peigne hauturier) est un pectinidé comestible, qui vit dans l'Atlantique Nord-Ouest, de Terre-Neuve à la Caroline du Nord. On en consomme la noix (muscle adducteur) et éventuellement le corail (gonade). En France, la noix peut être désignée sous le terme noix de Saint-Jacques du Canada.

Au Canada, il est surtout pêché en Nouvelle-Écosse[2] et sur le Banc George à la frontière maritime avec les États-Unis. La ville de Digby en a fait son activité principale. Aux États-Unis, on pêche aussi sur le Banc George, et jusqu'en Caroline du Nord.

Il a la forme typique des Pectinidae dont s'est inspirée la compagnie pétrolière Shell pour son logo.

Sa coquille atteint souvent plus de 15 cm de diamètre et le muscle, la noix, plus de 5 cm de diamètre.

Cycle naturel

Pêche

Au Canada, les pétoncles géants sont pêchés à 95 % en Nouvelle-Écosse par des bateaux spécifiques (dragues) qui ramassent les pétoncles sur le fond marin. Les pétoncles sont ensuite décoquillés pour ne garder que les noix et éventuellement le corail (bicolore). Cette opération peut être réalisée sur le bateau et être suivie immédiatement d'une surgélation IQF, ce qui en fait un produit de grande qualité.

En Nouvelle-Écosse, il y a deux pêcheries importantes, la pêcherie hauturière (principalement sur les bancs George et Brown)[3], et celle de la Baie de Fundy. Il y a aussi des pêcheries côtières beaucoup plus petites sur la côte atlantique et dans le Golfe du Saint-Laurent. La pêche hauturière a reçu en 2010 une certification environnementale MSC[4].

Les statistiques (tous pétoncles confondus) font état de débarquements de 59 850 tonnes au Canada atlantique en 2011[5].

Les noix de pétoncles sont exportées dans le monde entier et particulièrement vers les marchés américains, français, anglais, de Taïwan et de Hong-Kong. Certains marchés comme le marché français peuvent demander des noix avec corail, mais l'essentiel de la commercialisation concerne les noix surgelées sans corail.

Aquaculture

L'élevage de pétoncles d'autres espèces est très développé dans les pays asiatiques notamment le Japon, de là viennent différentes méthodes d'élevages comme les paniers-lanternes, les perl nets et les boucles d'oreilles.
Au Canada des développements sont en cours[6],[7].

Cuisine

La noix de pétoncle, ou pétoncle, est en forme de cylindre, faite de fibres parallèles, tendres sous la dent. Le pétoncle frais est délicieux cru, comme dans les sushis où il livre un goût sucré, ou mariné, comme dans le ceviche, ou encore doré à la poêle, où il exige une brève cuisson seulement. On le sert aussi pané, en brochette ou dans les pâtés aux fruits de mer. Le pétoncle s'accompagne de sauces ou vinaigrettes. La noix peut aussi être servie en plat principal, en restauration.

Placopecten magellanicus é unha especie de molusco bivalvo mariño da subclase dos pteriomorfios, orde dos ostreidos, superfamilia dos pectinoideos, familia dos pectínidos, subfamilia dos paliolinos e tribo dos paliolininos, a única integrante do xénero Placopecten.[1][2][3]

Trátase dunha especie comercialmente importante propia do noroeste do océano Atlántico.[4]

O xénero foi descrito en 1897 polo zoólogo estadounidense Addison Emery Verrill.[1][2][3]

Especie

A especie foi descrita en 1791 polo naturalista alemán Johann Friedrich Gmelin, baixo o nome Ostrea magellanica,[1][2][5] nas páxinas 3317-3318 da súa obra Caroli a Linné systema naturae per regna tria naturae, secundum classes, ordines, genera, species, cum characteribus, differentiis, synonymis, locis ... Editio decima tertia, aucta, reformata. Georg Emanuel Beer, Leipzig 1788–1793. Volume 1. Parte 6: Vermes.

Etimoloxía

Xénero

O nome do xénero, Placopecten, está formado polo elemento do latín científico placo-, derivado do grego antigo πλακ-, tirado do subatantivo πλάξ, πλακός pláks, plakós, "planicie", "chaira", unido ao nome do xénero Pecten, en alusión á que en forma e tamaño é semellante a outras especies grandes do xénero Pecten, especialmente a Pecten maximus,[6] pero coa cuncha moito menos estriada, máis plana.

Especie

O epíteto específico, magellanicus, está formado sobre a raíz do xenitivo magellanicī, do apelido latinizado, magellanicus, do navegante portugués Fernão de Magalhães (1470–1521) engadindo o sufixo do latín científico -icus, "referido a".

O xénero Placopecten é un taxon monotípico, é dicir que, como quedou dito, está integrado por unha soa especie:

  • Placopecten magellanicus.

Características

A cuncha desta vieira ten unha forma clásica, pero cos bordos lisos, a diferenza de Pecten maximus, que ten estrías e os bordos ondulados. O seu tamaño é de ao redor de 80 mm, pero hai individuos de até os 170 mm de diámetro. A cuncha é xeralmente de cor vermella rosada, cuns debuxo raiado con tonalidases máis escuroa que aparecen en moitos espécimes. O músculo adutor (a "carne" propiamente dita deste molusco) é grande, moitas veces de 30 a 40 mm de diámetro. Como todas as vieiras, P. magellanicus ten numerosos ollos fotorreceptores ao longo do bordo do seu manto rosado.[7]

Distribución e hábitat

Placopecten magellanicus encóntrase na plataforma continental do Atlántico noroeste, desde a costa norte do golfo de San Lourenzo até o cabo Hatteras, en Carolina do Norte.[8]

Esta vieira marinas xeralmente atópanse a profundidades que oscilan entre os 18 e os 110 m, pero tamén poden encontrase en auguas tan pouco profundas como até os 2 m en estuarios ao longo da costa de Maine e en Canadá. Na zonas máis ao sur encóntranse principalmente a profundidades entre os 45 e os 75 m, e son menos comúns en auguas pouco profundas (25–45 m) debido á alta temperatura. Aínda que e especie non é común a profundidades maiores dos 110 m, encontráronse algunhas poboacións tan profundas como 384 m, e se comunicaron poboacións de auguas profundas a 170–180 m no golfo de Maine. Esta vieira a miúdo podn encontrarse en agregados de numerosos individuos, chamadas leitos. Estas camas poden seren esporádicas (quizais duran algúns anos) ou esencialmente permanentes (por exemplo, camas comerciais na pescaría Georges Bank). A concentración máis alta de moits leitos permanentes parece corresponder a áreas de temperaturas adecuadas, dispoñibilidade de alimentos, substrato adecuado e onde as características oceanográficas físicas poden manter estadios larvais na vecindade da poboación de desova. [8]

As vieiras adultas encóntranse xeralmente sobre fondos de area firme, grava, cuncheiros e rochas. Entr os invertebrados asociados ás camas de vieiras están esponxas, hidrozoos, anemones, briozoos, poliquetos, mexillóns, cornos, anfípodos, cangrexos, lagostas, estrelas de mar, holoturias e tunicados.[8]

Sustentabilidade da pesca

Segundo a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration dos EE. UU. (NOAA), a pesca desta vieira do Atlántico goza de boa saúde e recóllese a niveis sostíbeis. A pesca desta vieira é a maior pesca de vieiras salvaxes para acuicultura do mundo. En 2008 colleitáronse nos Estados Unidos 53,5 millóns de libras de carne de vieira por valor de 370 millóns de dólares. Massachusetts e Nova Jersey son os estados onde se produciu a maioría da colleita dos EUA.[9]

O Seafood Watch (Observatorio de mariscos) do Monterey Bay Aquarium enumera estas vieiras como unha "boa alternativa", a súa segunda mellor clualificación.[10] Porén, esta especie está na lista vermella de Greenpeace porque afirma que se están a pescar excesivamente as existencias de vieiras, e que os métodos de pesca empregados están destruíndo os corais e as esponxas. Ademais, segundo Greenpeace, a pesca de vieiras mata case 1 000 tartarugas mariñas ao ano.[11]

Amerísk hörpuskel einnig nefnd Atlantshafs djúpsjávar hörpuskel (fræðiheiti: Placopecten magellanicus) er af diskaætt. Fisktegundir og hryggleysingjar ganga gjarnan undir mismunandi nöfnum víða um heim og villir það oft fyrir hinum almenna áhugamanni. Ameríska hörpuskelin er uppruninn í Atlantshafinu og nær frá Labrador til Norður-Karólínu.

Heimkynni

Ameríska hörpuskelin lifir á miðsævis sjó. Norður af Þorskhöfða heldur skelin sig á mjög grunnu vatni eða á um það bil tuttugu metrum. Suður af Þorskhöfða getur skelin lifað á 40- 200 metra dýpi. Ameríska hörpuskelin þrífst betur í svölum sjó Norður-Atlantshafsins. Í hvíld liggur skelin á sandbotni eða leðjubotni.

Útlit

Hörpuskelin hefur tvær skeljar sem loka dýrið af og festast þær saman með vöðva sem kreppir skelina saman. Vöðvinn sem kreppir skelina saman er sá biti í skelinni sem er borðaður. Inni í skeljunum eru mjúk líffæri dýrsins svo sem meltingarfæri og tálkn sem og taugakerfi. Skelin hefur hrjúfar brúnir að utanverðu. Efri hluti skeljarinnar er yfirleitt fölbleikur eða brúnn og neðri hluti skeljarinnar er hvítur og kremaður. Lítil prósenta, eða um 5-10 % skeljarinnar eru albínóar, með hvítan efri og neðri hluta. Stærð Amerísku hörpuskeljarinnar getur verið frá 10 cm til 23 cm en meðalstærð skeljarinnar er 15 cm.

Hrygning

Ameríska hörpuskelin getur fjölgað sér á öðru aldursári en framleiðir þó ekki mörg egg eða sæði fyrr en á fjórða aldursári. Hörpuskelin er mjög frjó, kvendýrið getur framleitt hundruð milljóna eggja á ári. Hörpuskelin hrygnir vanalega seint eða snemma á haustin. Skelin hrygnir einnig að vori, sérstaklega í Mið-Atlantshafi. Eftir að eggin klekjast út sveima lirfur skeljarinnar í sjónum í fjórar til sex vikur áður en þær setjast á sjávarbotninn. Margar tegundir fiska og hryggleysingja éta lirfurnar til dæmis þorskur, krabbi og humar.

Veiðar

Samkvæmt NOAA er ástand skeljarstofnsins gott og skelin veidd á ábyrgan hátt. Veiðar á Amerísku hörpuskelinni eru meðal mestu skelveiða í heiminum. Árið 2008 var um það bil 25.000 tonnum af skelbitum landað í Bandaríkjunum og var aflaverðmætið tæplega 37 milljarðar. Á hverju fiskveiðiári, sem hefst 1. mars, er skelveiðibátunum í Bandaríkjunum úthlutaður viss fjöldi daga til að sækja veiðar. Á mynd 1 má sjá veiðar á hörpuskel frá 1950-2014 í Kanada,Bandaríkjunum og Sankti Pierre og Miquelon. Veiðar í Sankti Pierre og Miquelon eru svo litlar að þær eru ekki sjáanlegar á myndinni. Þó er gott að vita að þar eru stundaðar hörpuskelsveiðar. í kringum 2000 aukast veiðar á hörpuskel gríðarlega og ná toppi árið 2004. Eftir árið 2004 fara aflatölur aftur niður og haldast nokkuð stöðugar í nokkur ár. 2014 fara aflatölurnar hratt niður því væri gaman að skoða nýjustu gögn frá FAO og sjá hversu miklum afla af hörpuskeljum er landað í dag.

Skeljarveiðarnar fara fram á vorin, sumrin og á veturna. Á veturna er mjög litlum afla landað þar sem flestir skelveiðibátar hafa klárað dagafjölda sinn á vorin og yfir sumartímann. Veiðafærið sem er notað við hörpuskelsveiðar heitir plógur. Plógurinn er dreginn á eftir bátnum og reynir hörpuskelin að sleppa en endar síðan í plógnum. Hefbundin hörpuskelsplógur er smíðaður úr járni.

Líftími

Ameríska hörpuskelin vex mjög hratt á sínum fyrstu árum og verður hún kynþroska á fjórða aldursári. Miðað við þær upplýsingar sem unnið er með hér er annarsvegar sagt að lífaldur hennar sé sex til átta ár og í öðrum upplýsingum 20 ár. Ef til vill er hann mismunandi eftir svæðum.

Afurðir

Hörpuskelin er hágæða afurð. Ameríska hörpuskelin er seld fersk í maí, júní, júlí og ágúst þegar veiðar standa sem hæst. Hún er einnig seld frosin í mun meira mæli. Hefbundin eldunaraðferð er að steikja skelbitann á pönnu upp úr smjöri en þó eru til fjölmargar aðrar leiðir til að elda skelbitann.
