Descripción

Mide 18 cm de llargu. La so corona y partes inferiores son d'un tonu ablondu-canela, la so grupa ye daqué más clara, l'aniellu qu'arrodia'l güeyu y la cobertoria de los oyíos son de tonu pardu escuru; el so gargüelu ye blanca y les sos plumes de vuelu son d'un tonu canela.

Distribución y hábitat

Ye endémica de les islles Paláu. El so hábitat natural son los montes baxos húmedos subtropicales o tropicales.

Der Palaufächerschwanz (Rhipidura lepida) ist eine Vogelart aus der Familie der Rhipiduridae. Sie ist endemisch in Palau.

Merkmale

Der Palaufächerschwanz ist ein typischer Vertreter der Familie mit kurzem Körper und langem Schwanz. Er erreicht Längen bis zu 18 Zentimeter. Scheitel, Nacken, Rücken und Oberseite des Schwanzes sind zimtfarben. Kehle und Wangen sind weiß und die Brust ist schwarz, die Flügel schwarz mit zimtfarbenen Rändern und der Bauch weiß. Die Schwanzunterseite ist schwarz mit rötlichen Spitzen. Es gibt in der Färbung keine Unterschiede zwischen den Geschlechtern, die Weibchen sind jedoch etwas kleiner als die Männchen. Juvenile Tiere haben eine braune Oberseite und schmutzigweiße Kehlen.^[1]

Habitat und Verbreitung

Der Palaufächerschwanz ist endemisch in Palau im Pazifik. Dort findet er sich auf den Inseln Babeldaob, Koror, Urukthapel, Eil Malk und Peleliu. Die Art lebt sowohl in Primär- wie Sekundärwäldern sowie in bewaldeten Schluchten der Savanne. Gelegentlich findet er sich auch in Buschland und kommt vereinzelt in Mangrovenwäldern vor.^[1]

Verhalten

Die Tiere sind äußerst aktiv während der Nahrungssuche, sie hüpfen und fliegen auf der Suche nach Beute unterhalb des Kronendaches und im Unterholz umher und nehmen sie aus der Luft oder von der Vegetation auf, gelegentlich auch aus Astgabeln und von Felsen. Das in Astgabeln fest gewobene Nest ist napfförmig, mit einem charakteristischen schwanzförmigen Anhängsel. Über das Brutverhalten ist kaum etwas bekannt. Palaufächerschwänze sind Standvögel.^[1]

Systematik

Die Art ist Teil einer Superspezies, bestehend aus dem Tanimbarfächerschwanz (Rhipidura opistherythra) der Tanimbarinseln, dem Sulawesifächerschwanz (Rhipidura teysmanni) von Sulawesi, dem Burufächerschwanz (Rhipidura superflua) von Buru und dem Seramfächerschwanz (Rhipidura dedemi) von Seram. Der Artname lepida aus der Erstbeschreibung von Gustav Hartlaub und Otto Finsch 1868 ist lateinisch und bedeutet „anmutig“.^[1]

Schutz

Die Art wird als ungefährdet eingestuft. Sie ist in ihrem Verbreitungsgebiet häufig und scheint sogar zahlenmäßig zugenommen zu haben.^[1]

The Palau fantail (Rhipidura lepida) is a species of bird in the fantail family Rhipiduridae. It is endemic to Palau.

Taxonomy and systematics

The species is closely related to and forms a superspecies with the long-tailed fantail of the Tanimbar Islands, the Sulawesi fantail of Sulawesi, the tawny-backed fantail of Buru and the streak-breasted fantail of Seram, all in Indonesia. The specific name, lepida, was given to the species when it was described by Hartlaub and Finsch in 1868, and is Latin, lepidus for 'charming'.^[2]

Description

The Palau fantail is a typical fantail, short-bodied and long-tailed, measuring 18 cm (7.1 in). The crown, nape, back and upper tail are cinnamon. The throat and malar are white and the breast is black, the wings are black edged with cinnamon, and the belly is white. The tail is black tipped with rufous. The sexes are the same in plumage but the females are slightly smaller. Juveniles have brown upperparts, and dingy white throats.^[2]

Habitat and distribution

The Palau fantail is endemic to Palau in the Pacific Ocean, where it can be found on Babeldaob (the largest island), Koror, Urukthapel, Eil Malk and Peleliu. The species is found in forests, including mature primary forests, secondary growth and forest patches in ravines in savannah. It will occasionally enter scrub and is found, albeit infrequently, in mangrove forests. The species is non-migratory.^[2]

Behaviour

The Palau fantail is an active feeder, hopping and flying while searching for prey, which can be caught in the air from or gleaned from vegetation. It moves through the subcanopy and undergrowth of the forest, occasionally, taking prey from tree trunks and rocks.^[2]

Very little is known about its breeding behaviour. Its nest is a tightly woven cup with a trailing tail set in a fork in a branch.^[2]

Status and conservation

The Palau fantail is not considered to be threatened with extinction. It is a restricted range species, being only found in Palau, but can be common within its range, and is thought to have increased in numbers since the 1930-1940s. It is one of the more common forest birds in Palau, and is listed as least concern by the IUCN.^[2]
