Aromobates nocturnus is a relatively large aromobatid, with females reaching 62 mm. This frog can be identified mainly by the noxious substance that they secrete, which gives off odor similar to a skunk. This noxious odor acts as a defense against predation. Dorsally this frog is green, with yellow dots present in a straight line above the belly. The hind feet are webbed (Caldwell and Summers 2003).This species was first described by Myers et al.(1991). Phylogenetically, it is one of the most basal members of the poison frog family Aromobatidae. Aromobates nocturnus is the only known nocturnal aromobatid (all others are diurnal), and the only known aquatic aromobatid (all others are terrestrial).

This species is known only from a single locality in northwestern Venezuela. It inhabits an area with small streams and rivulets in thick Andean cloud forest, at 2250 m above sea level (Caldwell and Summers 2003).

Aromobates nocturnus is both nocturnal and aquatic. This frog has been found only in streams, sitting or swimming in the water. The diet is thought to consist of small insects and arthropods. No information has yet been collected on the calls or reproductive aspects of this species. The common name derives from the noxious odor produced by this frog when it is handled, similar to the odor of a skunk. The skin secretion which emits the odor is neither toxic nor an alkaloid (Caldwell and Summers 2003).

Aromobates nocturnus, the skunk frog, is a species of critically endangered[2] frog endemic to Trujillo State in Venezuela.[3] It is an extremely rare frog, and no sightings have been recorded since the original description in the early 1990s.[1]
Description
Aromobates nocturnus has a noxious but non-toxic skin secretion with skunk-like odor.[4] Unlike the related poison dart frogs, this species is fully aquatic and much larger, up to 62 millimetres (2.4 in) in length.[5] It is nocturnal and usually found swimming or sitting in water.[4]
It is commonly believed that the Aromobates nocturnus is the sister group of the Dendrobatidae due to its unique characteristics including its larger size, nocturnal and aquatic nature, and the presence of the adductor mandibulae externus superficialis muscle most often found in other Dendrobatids.
The male protects the eggs that are laid on land. After hatching, the male carries the tadpoles on his back to water where they develop further.[1]
Habitat
The natural habitats of Aromobates nocturnus are small cold-water streams in cloud forests. The species is threatened by habitat loss caused by agriculture, involving both crops and livestock. It could also potentially be affected by disease, such as chytridiomycosis.[1]

Występowanie
Można go spotkać tylko w 1 miejscu: w pobliżu Agua de Obispo w stanie Trujillo w Wenezueli (jest to endemit). Zamieszkuje tropikalny las deszczowy w pobliżu strumieni[2].
Status
Jest bardzo rzadki, a jego liczebność prawdopodobnie spada. Pomimo starań udało się go znaleźć tylko raz, gdy został opisany (1991 rok). Największe zagrożenie stanowi dla niego zniszczenie środowiska naturalnego związane głównie z rozwojem rolnictwa[2].
