The larvae feed on Alnus hirsuta and Alnus matsumurae. They mine the leaves of their host plant. The mine has the form of a ptychonomous leaf mine, occurring upon the lower surface of leaves.

Phyllonorycter maculata is een vlinder uit de familie van de mineermotten (Gracillariidae). De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort werd voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1963 door Kumata.[1]
