Psydrax is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae. It consists of trees, shrubs, and a few lianas in the paleotropics.
The genus was named by Joseph Gaertner in 1788 in his book, De Fructibus et Seminibus Plantarum.[1] Psydrax is a Greek word meaning a blister or bump. Gaertner may have chosen this name to refer to the warty fruit or the pimply seeds of some species.[2] The name was hardly ever used after Gaertner proposed it because most authors placed these species in Canthium. Psydrax was reinstated in 1985 and 37 African species were transferred to it from Canthium.[3] The monospecific genus Mesoptera was also sunk into Psydrax.[4] Psydrax was shown to be monophyletic in a molecular phylogenetic study.[5] It is closely related to Afrocanthium, Cyclophyllum and Keetia, genera that have been segregated from Canthium.[5][6]

Psydrax è un genere di piante da fiore, appartenenti alla famiglia delle Rubiaceae, sottofamiglia delle Ixoroideae, tribù delle Vanguerieae. Esso consiste in alberi, arbusti e in poche liana nel regno paleotropico.
Il genere venne denominato nel 1788 da Joseph Gaertner nel suo De Fructibus et Seminibus Plantarum.[1] Psydrax è una parola greca che indica una bolla o una gobba. Gaertner può aver scelto questo termine riferendosi al frutto verrucoso o ai semi foruncolosi di alcune specie[2] Il nome del genere fu appena utilizzato dopo che Gaertner lo aveva proposto poiché molti autori ponevano queste specie nel genere Canthium. Psydrax fu ripristinato nel 1985 e 37 specie africane vi furono trasferite dal Canthium.[3] Il genere "monospecie" Mesoptera fu anche inserito nel Psydrax.[4]
Fu dimostrato che il genere Psydrax è monofilo in uno studio di Filogenesi molecolare.[5] Esso è strettamente legato ai Afrocanthium, Cyclophyllum e Keetia, generi che sono stati staccati dal Canthium.[5][6]
