Iodotropheus és un gènere de peixos pertanyent a la família dels cíclids.[3]

Iodotropheus ist eine Gattung aus der Familie der Buntbarsche (Cichlidae), die im östlichen Afrika im Malawisee endemisch ist. Der Name bezieht sich auf die rostfarbenen Bereiche auf Kopf und Rücken der Typusexemplare (Gr.: „ios“ = rost + Tropheus (Buntbarschgattung)).
Iodotropheus-Arten werden 6,5 bis 11 cm lang, Weibchen bleiben etwas kleiner. Sie ähneln der Gattung Pseudotropheus. Das Kopfprofil ist steil ansteigend, eine Hautfalte verbindet die Oberlippe mit der Oberseite der Schnauze. Ausgewachsene Fische besitzen eine äußere Zahnreihe großer, einspitziger Zähne. Die kleineren Zähne der inneren Zahnreihen sind zwei- bis dreispitzig. Die Kiemenreuse weist 7 bis 10 Stacheln auf der ersten Ceratobranchiale und 1 bis 3 auf der ersten Epibranchiale, der Knochenstütze des oberen Astes des ersten Kiemenbogens, auf. Alle Iodotropheus-Arten sind Maulbrüter. Ihre Eiflecke sind schwarz umrandet.
Bisher sind drei Arten beschrieben worden.

Like all cichlids from Lake Malawi these cichlids are best maintained in hard, alkaline water. Iodotropheus are best kept in aquariums with volumes greater than 120 L (31.5 gallon).

Il nome scientifico del genere deriva dalle parole greche iodos, che indica il colore della ruggine ma anche della lavanda, in riferimento alla livrea della specie tipo I. sprengerae, + tropaion (o dal latino tropheus), memoriale dei caduti, riferito alla particolare dentatura.
Caratteristica identificativa degli Iodotropheus è la conformazione del labbro superiore, collegato da un frenulo alle gengive, e la particolare dentatura.
Le dimensioni variano dai 6 ai 10 cm, secondo la specie.

Представителей этого рода довольно легко содержать в аквариумах, размножаются в неволе без особых проблем. Йодотрофеусов лучше содержать в аквариумах объёмом не менее 120 л. Как всем и цихлидам озера Малави йодотрофеусам нужна жесткая щелочная вода.
