The hooked squid, family Onychoteuthidae, currently comprise about 20–25 species (several known from only single life stages and thus unconfirmed), in six or seven genera. They range in mature mantle length from 7 cm to a suggested length of 2 m for the largest member, Onykia robusta. The family is characterised by the presence of hooks only on the tentacular clubs, a simple, straight, funnel–mantle locking apparatus, and a 'step' inside the jaw angle of the lower beak. With the exception of the Arctic Ocean, the family is found worldwide.

Gli Onicoteutidi (Onychoteuthidae Gray, 1847) sono una famiglia di calamari comprendente 27 specie raggruppate in sette generi. Le dimensioni del mantello negli esemplari adulti variano da 7 cm ai 2 m del rappresentante più grande della famiglia, Onykia robusta. La famiglia è caratterizzata dalla presenza di uncini solamente sulle clave tentacolari, da un apparato di bloccaggio sifone-mantello semplice e diritto e da una sorta di «scalino» all'interno dell'angolo mascellare della parte inferiore del becco. La famiglia è presente in tutti i mari del mondo, ad eccezione del mar Glaciale Artico.
