Callichthys serralabium is a tropical freshwater fish belonging to the Callichthyinae sub-family of the family Callichthyidae.

Taxonomy

It was originally described by Lehmann & Reis in 2004. The species name serralabium comes from the presence of a serrated lower lip in this species, which differentiates it from other members of this genus.^[1]

Distribution

It originates in inland waters in South America, and is found in the upper Orinoco River and lower Rio Negro basins of the Amazon River drainage in Venezuela and Brazil.^[1]

Description

C. serralabium can be distinguished from the other species of Callichthys by having the lower lip serrated (it is smooth in all other species). It also has 8–9 branched rays in the pectoral fin (instead of 6–7) and an irregular color pattern of dark, diffuse blotches on flanks of adults.^[1] The fish will grow in length up to 15.8 centimetres (6.2 in) SL.^[1]

The body is elongated and moderately depressed anteriorly; the trunk and caudal peduncle are progressively more compressed towards the caudal fin. The body profile between snout and dorsal-fin origin straight to slightly convex. The snout is rounded or roughly triangular in dorsal view. The mouth is slightly inferior (pointed downwards).^[1]

The dorsal fin and pectoral fins have one spine. The pectoral fin spine has stronger odontodes anteriorly and small retrorse hooks posteriorly. The pectoral spine of fully developed nuptial males is elongated and thick. The pelvic fins and caudal fin are rounded. The adipose fin has a pointed, depressible spine.^[1]

Callichthys serralabium is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van de pantsermeervallen (Callichthyidae).^[1] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 2004 door Lehmann A. & Reis.

Callichthys serralabium là một loài cá da trơn nước ngọt nhiệt đới thuộc chi Callichthys trong họ Callichthyidae. Loài này được tìm thấy ở thượng nguồn sông Orinoco và hạ lưu Río Negro của sông Amazon, thuộc Venezuela và Brazil^[1][2].

Tên gọi

Cái tên serralabium được ghép từ serra ("cái cưa") và labium ("môi"), ám chỉ đến những khía răng cưa của mép môi dưới, là đặc điểm nhận biết nó với các thành viên khác trong chi Callichthys^[1].

Mô tả

Như đã dề cập ở trên, môi dưới C. serralabium có những đường răng cưa nhọn, trong khi các loài Callichthys khác lại nhẵn. C. serralabium có 8 - 9 vây tia ở vây ngực (thay vì 6 - 7) và những mảng màu sẫm tối chạy dọc hai bên sườn của cá thể trưởng thành. Cá con có sọc màu sặc sỡ hơn. Cá trưởng thành sẽ dài tới 15,8 cm^[1][2][3].

C. serralabium có thân dài và đầu chúi về phía trước. Mõm cá gần như hình tam giác. Phần thân tính từ mõm đến vây lưng có vài điểm lồi. Phần xương ức của cá đực phát triển mạnh và rất dày. Vây mái chèo và vây đuôi được bo tròn; vây lưng và vây ngực có ngạnh; vây mỡ có ngạnh nhọn, có thể ấn xuống^[3].
