Labeo cylindricus Peters 1852

Die Rooioog-moddervis (Labeo cylindricus) is 'n varswater vis wat wydverspreid voorkom in riviere in Oos-Afrika, vanaf die Zambezirivier tot by die Pongolarivier. Dit kom ook voor in sekere dele van die Kongorivier. In Engels staan die vis bekend as die Redeye labeo.

Voorkoms

Die vis se lyf is silindries en het 'n kenmerkende uitstaande snoet; gewoonlik met stervormige tuberkels op. Die bek is groot en die lippe vlesig. Daar is een paar baarde om die bek. Die vis is geel-groen met 'n donker baan wat horisontaal oor die lyf strek. Die groter visse is donkerder olyf grys. Die oë is kenmerkend rooi en die vis word tot 230 mm lank.

Habitat

Die vis leef in helder, vloeiende water in rotsagtige dele van klein en groot riviere. Ook in rotsagtige dele van damme en mere. Hulle leef in skole saam en vreet alge. Hulle migreer in skole stroomop om te broei en gebruik die mond en pektorale vinne om oor versperrings te kom.

The redeye labeo (Labeo cylindricus) is a species of fish in the cyprinid genus Labeo. It is a freshwater fish endemic to the rivers of East Africa, from the Zambezi through the Limpopo and Komati Rivers to the Pongola River. It also inhabits upper and middle parts of the Congo River.

Appearance

The body of the fish is cylindrical and it has a characteristic protruded snout, usually with star shaped tubercles on it. The mouth is large and the lips fleshy. The general colour is yellow-green with a darker band stretching horizontal over the body. Older fish is a darker olive grey. The eyes are typically red and the fish reaches 23 cm in length.

Habitat

The species prefers clear, running waters in rocky habitats of small and large rivers, and is also found in lakes and dams over rocky areas. It feeds on diatoms and other small algae from the rocks. It migrates upstream in masses to breed, using the mouth and broad pectoral fins to climb damp surfaces of barrier rocks and weirs in the river.

Labeo cylindricus is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van eigenlijke karpers (Cyprinidae).^[2] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1852 door Peters.
