Microrasbora rubescens (Lat.: „rubescens“ = rötlich), genannt Rote Zwergrasbora, ist ein sehr kleiner südasiatischer Bärbling (Danioninae). Er kommt endemisch im burmesischen Inle-See und den angrenzenden Gewässern vor.

Merkmale

Microrasbora rubescens wird lediglich 3 bis 3,5 cm lang. Weibchen sind größer und kräftiger. Der Körper ist langgestreckt und seitlich abgeflacht und von gelblicher bis blausilbriger Grundfärbung. Ein dunkler Längsstrich reicht von unterhalb der Rückenflosse bis auf den Schwanzflossenstiel, wo er in einem runden, schwarzen Fleck endet. Ein weiterer schwarzer Fleck ist oft kurz vor dem Afterflossenansatz zu sehen. Geschlechtsreife Exemplare sind an den Körperseiten und an der Unterseite des Kopfes orangefarben bis rot, Männchen während der Paarungszeit völlig rot. Die Flossen von Microrasbora rubescens sind farblos und transparent. Die Bauchflossen sind relativ lang. Eine Seitenlinie fehlt.

Lebensweise

Microrasbora rubescens lebt in großen Schwärmen in dichten Pflanzenbeständen an den Ufern des Inle-See und in umliegenden Teichen und Sümpfen. Das Wasser seines Lebensraums ist relativ hart und kühl (20 bis 22 °C). In Aquarien gehaltene Fische bleiben in weichem Wasser blass.

Die IUCN klassifiziert die Art als stark gefährdet (Endangered). Umweltverschmutzung und die Einführung invasiver Arten gelten als Hauptgrund für die Gefährdung der Art.

Red dwarf rasbora (Microrasbora rubescens) is a species of cyprinid found endemic to Lake Inle in Shan State in Myanmar.^[1] It belongs to the genus Microrasbora, which contains two small species of danionins.^[2]

Description

The dwarf red rasbora reaches up to 3.0 cm (1.2 in) in length. Its meristics are that there are 2 spines and 6-7 soft rays in the dorsal fin and 3 spines and 10-12 soft rays in the anal fin.^[3] The females are less instensly coloured than the males and are larger and have a much deeper body.^[4]

Habitat

The dwarf red rasbora is endemic to Lake Inle which is situated in a valley where the rocks form a karst and which lies 900m above sea level in the Shan Plateau region of Shan State.^[4] Within the lake this species can be found in the midwater and in the marginal waters of Lake Inle where it is associated with submerged vegetation and forms large schools.^[1]

Conservation

The red dwarf rasbora is exploited for the aquarium trade and it is thought this may have some impact on the population. It is also threatened by the introduction of exotic fish species to the lake, particularly Parambassis and Tilapia species, which act as both predators on and competitors with the red dwarf rasbora. In addition the lake has been polluted from a number of sources, especially from the growing human population in settlements around the lake, while sedimentation and agricultural runoff enters the lake from its drainage basin. The invasive water hyacinth has covered large areas of the lake and this has reduced the area of open water in the lake, this effect being exacerbated by water abstraction and sedimentation.^[1]

Microrasbora rubescens is een straalvinnige vissensoort uit de familie van de eigenlijke karpers (Cyprinidae).^[1] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1918 door Annandale.
