Colonies. In vitro growing readily on PDA and MA at 15-20°C, greenish brown at first becoming dark brown to greyish black with age (but the margin whitish at first), floccose and felt-like, reverse black. Conidiophores. Erect, simple or sparsely dichotomously branched, regularly septate, pale olive brown to brown below, becoming colourless above, short, mainly less than 45 μm tall, 2.5-4 μm diam. Conidia. Arising on pegs in the upper third of the conidiophores, smooth or very slightly roughened, colourless but sometimes becoming pale fuscous with age, irregularly ellipsoid to pyriform, 5-6 × 3-4 μm. Ascomata. Perithecial, arising singly from the mycelium, among the conidiophores or unaccompanied by the anamorph, ostiolate, dark brown to black, globose to subglobose below, 75-115 × 55-90 μm, apex with a distinct neck, short cylindrical, usually about 20-30 μm wide and 10 μm tall; terminal hairs erect, geniculate, rigid, simple or occasionally branched, remotely septate, dark brown to black, 4.5-6.5 μm diam. at the base, to 325μm long; short sterile colourless branches, claviform, mainly 7-9 × 3.5-5 μm; lateral hairs similar, sparse, 3.5-5 μm diam. at the base. Asci. Linear-cylindrical, thin walled, deliquescing after the spores have matured, mainly 65-70 × 8 μm, 8 spored with spores arranged in a single row. Ascospores. Olive brown when mature, ellipsoid, with an equatorial furrow, 7.5-10 × 5-9 μm, sometimes folded or compressed.
