Batesia hypochlora Felder 1862

Batesia is a monotypic butterfly genus of the family Nymphalidae. It contains only Batesia hypochlora, the painted beauty.

Distribution

This species is found in the upper Amazon areas of Brazil, Ecuador and Peru.

Description

Batesia hypochlora can reach a wingspan of 85-95 mm.^[2] The upperside of the wings is blue, with a submarginal band of the same color surrounding the outer margin of the hindwings. On the forewings there is a large pink patch.^[3] The underside of the hindwings is yellow, varying in tone from pale cream to deep saffron depending on locality.^[4]

Batesia es un género monotípico de lepidópteros perteneciente a la familia Nymphalidae. Su única especie Batesia hypochlora C. & R. Felder, 1862, es originaria de América donde se distribuye por el alto Amazonas, Ecuador y Perú.^[1]​

Las larvas se alimentan de especies del género Caryodendron.

Batesia hypochlora is een vlinder uit de familie Nymphalidae.^[1] De wetenschappelijke naam van de soort is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1862 door Felder.

Batesia hypochlora er en sommerfugl som tilhører gruppen Biblidinae i den store familien flikvinger (Nymphalidae).

Utseende

En stor (vingespenn 85-95 millimeter), svært fargerik sommerfugl med avrundede vinger. Oversiden er skinnende blå bortsett fra et skarpt rosa skråbånd på forvingen. Forvingens underside er mørk, også med det rosa skråbåndet. Bakvingens underside er gul med svart ytterkant.

Levevis

Larvene lever på planter i slekten Caryodendron i vortemelkfamilien (Euphorbiaceae).

Utbredelse

Arten er utbredt langs den nordlige delen av Andesfjellene.
