Description: Much of what passes as Montana steppe (prairie) actually comprises mostly few grass species that withstand long histories of overstocking, such as Agropyron cristatum (crested wheatgrass), Agropyron dasystachyum (thickspike wheatgrass), and Stipa comata (needle and thread grass). Description: Agropyron dasystachyum (the light green grass at center and front right) is one of the more ecologically versatile species in that it can be common immediately adjacent to the roadside, just off the roadside on native substrate, and out in the sagebrush steppe where it is often one of the most common grasses especially at the lower elevations. Description: Agropyron dasystachyum is shown here dominating the 2010 post-fire vegetation in this particular area and in general. All of the common grasses including Elymus elymoides, Stipa comata, Oryzopsis hymenoides, and Bromus tectorum can dominate a particular site with Bromus tectorum seemingly having no particular post-fire advantage.
