Malacopteron (rodz. męski): gr. μαλακος malakos „miękki”; πτερον pteron „pióro”[6].

Ophrydornis (rodz. męski): gr. οφρυδιον ophrudion „brew”, od zdrobnienia οφρυς ophrus, οφρυος ophruos „brew”; ορνις ornis, ορνιθος ornithos „ptak”[7]. Gatunek typowy: Setaria albogularis Blyth, 1844.
