In 1893 G.A. Boulenger described of Rana feae, one of five new species he described in his account of the 724 frog specimens that Italian explorer and zoologist Leonardo Feae brought back to the Genoa Civic Museum from an 1887 expedition to the Kakhien hills of Myanmar. Boulenger’s description was based on just a single male specimen, from Bhamò, the holotype (MSNG 29301; Capocaccia 1957). Rana (now Nanorana) feae, commonly known as the Kakhien paa frog or Ocellated Spiny Frog, was subsequently reported in Hotha, Yunnan, China, but has not reported again since (Frost 2016; Boulenger 1920; Capocaccia 1957; Liu 1950).
An olive brown in dorsal coloring, N. feae has scattered dark spots on its back, bars across its limbs, large and small warts on its body sides, and a dirty-white ventral side.Nanorana feae is stout in stature, with a broad head, and short, webbed toes. The type specimen measured 3.5 inches (92 mm) in snout-vent length. This specimen was evidently collected during the breeding season as it had thickened arms and black spines on its breast and fingers, male adaptations for breeding that Boulenger cited as similar to Rana liebigii, a close relative (Boulenger 1893).It probably inhabits, and breeds in, hill streams in forested areas. Its type locality in Myanmar is near to Hkakabo Razi National Park (van Dijk et al. 2004).
As there is such a scanty record for Nanorana feae, its taxonomic identity has been called into question. The IUCN account reports that Bourret (1942) considered it a synonym of N. yunnanensis. The IUCN lists it as data deficient, as its identity and range is unclear (van Dijk et al. 2004).Clearly, a better understanding the identity of N. feae, and of Himalayan Paa frogs more generally, is necessary to ensure this species is protected.
Paa feae és una espècie de granota que viu a la Xina i Birmània.
Nanorana feae (common names: Kakhien paa frog, ocellated spiny frog) is a species of frog in the family Dicroglossidae. It is found in Yunnan, China, and the Kachin Hills in Myanmar.[2] The specific name feae honors Leonardo Fea, an Italian explorer, zoologist, and naturalist.[3] This little-known species probably inhabits hill streams in forested areas.[1]
Nanorana feae are relatively large frogs, attaining a snout–vent length of about 92 mm (3.6 in).[4]
