Plasterer Bees

Super cool, Super rare, Super fun. Who would say such a thing about a little brown bee? In this case it is Colletes ciliatus. Here is a bee that was featured in a paper we wrote several years ago as one of the "missing bees" not seen for many years. It has only a few records; all from the MidWest with one specimen from Alexandria (the town across from Washington D.C.) . Then Tim McMahon found one on Dodder at the edge of the marsh in Jug Bay on the Patuxent River in October in Maryland. A little poking and we found another record on Dodder from the MidWest. So, it may be possible that we need to collect more on Dodder which has small blooms and is difficult to collect off of. Afterwards Don Harvey collected a male also on Dodder from the same area. A nice advance of the natural history and perhaps conservation of this rare species. For some reason this automatically makes a bee cute compared to the standard bee face format that most species display. I am note sure of the preferences of this species but many Colletes use pollen from only a small number of plants. Biodiversity ...check. Where this bee was collected in Mexico, its preferred host plant flowers only in the early evening hours. As a result, this Mexican endemic species is active during the day for only about half and hour . Males of the Serrated Evening Bee have interestingly cut-out shaped antennae and expanded hindlegs, likely the product of sexual selection, but, as usual, their actual functions are unknown as this species and the other 10 members of this genus are rare in collections and difficult to study in the wild

I stopped by a pullout in the sandhills of Nebraska on my way to the Badlands one year and just did some collecting off the sweet clover and other mostly weedy plants that lined the dirt parking area and along the nearby rail road tracks....fantastically abundant with bees. This was one of them the relatively common Colletes robertsonii. The bee genus Colletes...also known as Cellophane Bees because of their habitat of lining their cells with a plastic like substance...is full of relatively uncommon bees that specialist on a the pollen of a small number of plants or groups of plants. This may be the case with C. phaceliae given its name...but I am not clear. This bees was colleted at Badlands National Park in South Dakota.
