Dasineura pellex
provided by EOL authors
Gall midges in the family Cecidomyiidae form galls on various plants. The midge Dasineura pellex forms "globular or bullet shaped" (as described by Gagne) galls on the upper side of leaflets of trees in the family Fraxinus (ash). The galls may be green, purple or black. The small white larvae live inside the gall in the early summer, dropping to the soil in mid June and overwintering in the soil. Distribution is thought to be throughout northeastern North America.
