Description: Illustration of
Schomburgkia crispa (syn. of
Laelia marginata) This illustration is described by
Hooker as: Schomburgkia marginata var. petalis sepalisque immarginatis ("Schomburgkia with margin, variety has petals and sepals without margin", which seems somewhat paradoxical). However, 4 years later in Edwards's Botanical Register vol. 30 tab. 23
Lindley wrote (in his article on S. crispa,
text here) that he had mistakenly identified this plant as a var. of marginata for Hooker: "Although the author of the species (S. crispa), I must plead guilty to having on one occasion, (Bot. Reg. misc. Feb. 1839) confounded it with S. marginata, and thus misled Sir Wm. Hooker, whose figure in the Bot. Magazine, t. 3729, undoubtedly belongs to this species.". Date: 1840. Source:
