A key diagnostic feature to identify Bruguiera hainesii is that the calyx lobes are perpendicular (90 degrees) to the propagule. Secondly, the pinkish-coloured calyx, distinguishes Bruguiera hainesii from the red-coloured and common Bruguiera gymnorhiza.

Bruguiera hainesii (left). The calyx of Bruguiera hainesii (Berus Mata Buaya) is pink in colour, when compared to the red-coloured calyx of the common Bruguiera gymnorhiza species.

Globally, this is one of the two most Critically Endangered mangrove tree species.

Also known as "Berus Mata Buaya" meaning the "Eye of the crocodile". This is one of the two IUCN designated Critically Endangered mangrove tree species in the world. The other one is Sonneratia griffithii. For example in Singapore, we have three known B. hainesii trees, while in Vietnam, there are only 4 known trees on the island of Con Dao.
