Stereum rugosum, syn.: Haematostereum rugosum (Pers.) Pouzar (1959)Bleeding Broadleaf CrustSlo.: grbanasta slojevkaDat.: Jan. 21. 2012Lat.: 46.33611 Long.: 13.52567Code: Bot_591/2012_DSC2542 Habitat: Secondary mixed forest, deciduous trees dominant, nearly flat terrain, cretaceous clastic rock (flysh) bedrock, in shade, partly protected from direct rain by tree canopies, average precipitations ~ 3.000 mm/year, average temperature 8-10 deg C, elevations 460 m (1.500 feet), alpine phytogeographical region.Substratum: dead but still standing and not yet debarked Alnus incana. Place: Bovec basin, west of Bovec, near the end of the trail from station A of the Kanin cable car to village Pluna, East Julian Alps, Posoje, Slovenia EC Comments: Growing on mossy bark of a tree. Photographed in almost dry state. Hymenium dull ocher-orange (oac757), at the thin margins almost white; mostly resupinate, rarely somewhat effused-reflexed, small huts blakish-brouwn; SP abundant, crme color (oac857); after keeping it at 100% relative humidity and room temperatures for a few days it started bruising reddish when handled and secreting blood-red milk when scratcher with a needle or knife.Motic B2-211A, magnification 400 x in water. On the same log also Fomitopsis pinicola.Place: Bovec basin, at the foot of Mt. ukla, below Ravni laz place, East Julian Alps, Posoje, Slovenia EC Comments: According to Ref.:(2) S. subtomentostum has no acanthohyphydia in the hymenium while similar S. ostrea has them (Ref.:(2), p335 and key on p.356). I was unable to find them in spite of the fact that they should be quite large (>100 x 5-10 micr. Ref.:(1)). There was no bleeding observed probably because of fairly dry state of the fruitbodies and weather. Average day temperatures about 0 deg C with -5 degC during the night.Pileus dimensions up to 9 x 5 cm (3.5 x 2 inch), 1 mm or less thick. Smell indistinctive. Cup upper surface rusty-red-brown (oac700), hymenium dull brown-red (oac700), trama of wood color, with thin (~ 0,1 mm) brown upper layer and about 0.4 mm thick hymenial layer.Ref.:(1) G.J.Krieglsteiner (Hrsg.), Die Grosspilze Bade-Wrttembergs, Band 1, Ulmer (2000), p339. Stereum hirsutum (Willd.) Pers.A leathery, thin-fleshed polypore favoring decaying hardwood; it's relatively easy to identify in the field by the smooth fertile surface, orange-yellow rim of growing fruitbodies, which are usually arranged in numerous shelves; the upper surface is covered with short, bristle-like hairs (hence the Latin epithet).
