A widely branching shrub 1-4 m. tall, with glabrate or minutely pubescent foliage; leaves deciduous, the blades thinnish but often rather firm, oval or elliptic, varying to ovate or obovate, 4-10 cm. long, acute or shortacuminate, serrate, rather abruptly narrowed or rarely rounded at the base, short-petioled; panicles 2-10 cm. long, simple or branching, often manyflowered; pedicels stout, 1-2 mm. long; calyx glabrous, the lobes oblong-ovate or ovate, 2-3 mm. long, acute, involute; corolla white, 6-8 mm. long, oblongcylindric, the lobes ovate recurved; anthers nearly 2 mm. long, each sac with a slender awn; capsules spheroidal, 5-6 mm. broad, lobed. ^
Type locality: Mountains near Paint Rock, Tennessee.
