Ruta graveolens L. Sp. PI. 383. 1753 An ill-scented, glaucous, perennial herb, 3-8 dm. tall, woody at the base; leaves twice or thrice pinnatelyorternately divided, commonly triangular in outline, the segments oblong to obovate, rounded, notched or sometimes acute at the apex ; sepals lanceolate to triangular or sometimes ovate, entire or crenulate, 3-4 mm. long ; petals with an involute margin and apex, entire or toothed, 5-8 mm. long ; ovary with rounded lobes ; capsule obovoid, 8-12 mm. broad, the apex of the lobes rounded.
Type locality : Southern Europe.
Distribution: Waste places and cultivated grounds, eastern United States. Introduced from Europe and thoroughly naturalized in some localities.
