One of the two caterpillars I photographed just after eclosion (emergence from the egg) one week ago. It has doubled in size--6 mm, growing to 13 mm. I hope I can keep them healthy and growing--I don't have a lot of experience raising cats.

Final instar of the caterpillar--a rich brown, as opposed to the green of earlier stages. About 55 mm length.-BugGuide account--

My how its grown in a couple of weeks: 6mm to 37 mm. It gained color after the initial instar, looking much more like a typical green sphinx. Only one cat survived--I believe this one probably ate the smaller one--a lesson for future rearing--keep them separate!Note how the "tail" (or horn) gets proportionally shorter, compared to the body, as the cat grows. This reminds me of how a puppy "grows into its feet".-BugGuide account--

I saw an adult ovipositing on the small twin emergent leaves (cotyledons?) of Virginia Creeper,
Parthenocissus quinquefolia--at least that is what I think the plant to be--there were typical five-fingered leaves nearby. The eggs were laid on the underside of the leaves. They are pale green spheres, just over 1 mm in diameter, and virtually featureless. A caterpillar emerged from each of two eggs I collected on 2 May. Length on 3 May (here) was about 6 mm.-BugGuide account--

Pupa. As of 8/22/2009, it still has not emerged. I wonder if it is going to overwinter? It looks healthy, so I hope to see the adult.-BugGuide account--
