Hercules Beetle (Scarabeus hercules = Dynastes hercules, plate 40b) from Le rgne animal (The Animal Kingdom) by Georges Cuvier. I don't see the set of scarab beetle plates in the BHL Flickr set--I found this by paging through the reference on BHL itself. I cleaned up the background, cropped, and downsampled from the original to produce this one. Usually this species is shown in a lateral view--interesting to see a dorsal portrait.
A male Atlas Beetle, one of the large Asian Rhinoceros Beetles. Native to Indonesia and neighboring states. The flange on the central horn distinguishes it from two other of this genus in Sumatra. In context at www.dixpix.ca/indonesia/fauna/beetles/index.html
