Wyethia angustifolia has a bioregional distribution in California ranging from the South Coast Ranges, through the Sierra Nevada, North Coast Ranges and northwestern California. Outside California the range includes Oregon and the southern elements of Washington. Elevations of occurrence are below 2000 meters. Typical habitats are grasslands and open woodlands.

With a common name of Narrow leaf mule ears, this sturdy plant achieves a height of 30 to 90 centimeters. The more or less rough-hairy leaves manifest as basal blades 10 to 50 centimeters long; blades are oblanceolate. The yellow flowers are prominent.
