Description: A trap in a rather wet garden last night did produce an Acleris cristana - I have recorded this species here every third year, 2006, 2009, 2012 and now 2015, always in spring. Description: First proper catch of the year After a mild day at the Zoo, I decided to set the trap up at 5.30pm and as I did it began to drizzle, but luckily the sky was thick with lovely warming clouds..no bright moon tonight! Come the morning it was still trying to rain but was relatively mild at 7 degrees. I didn't really expect 13 moths in and around the trap! 8 Tortricodes alternella's made up the bulk of the catch. The best moth had to be the pretty little Acleris cristana, a garden first. The 3 new for year Micros bump the species tally up to 8. Description: Catch Report - 24/01/12 - Farmland/Back Garden - Hertfordshire Only the 4th trapping session of the new year and as we roll into a very cold start to February there is little pickings, and it just has not been worth articulating the trap into position and then proceeding to burn 125 watts of electricity for upto 10 hours. On the positive side I managed my first 'Micro' Moth of the year, unexpectedly it turned out to be an Acleris cristana, not a common Moth for me. The trap that was positioned under a large Oak was certainly more prolific, although many more moths were found in the trap rather than the sheet this time, showing the shift of warmer flying conditions, and the catch comprising of mostly spring species as opposed to winter stragglers, whih tended to not fly too much! On returning at 6am this morning I was pleasantly surprised with the catch, which included multiple new for years and countless Small Quaker (the total tally was 98) Best moths included recent emergences of Lunar Marbled Brown and Frosted Green and a slightly aberrant Hebrew Character. The micro's turned up in good numbers as well for the first time this year with Diurnea fagella and Eriocrania subpurpurella being the most common. Description: Catch Report - 22/02/12 - Farmland/Back Garden - Hertfordshire A cracking night with temperatures getting ilder as the night went on, at 12am when I returned home there were Moths everywhere! and I duly potted up 16 there and then. By the morning a grand total of 31 Moths were to be found including 2 new for year Micro Moths, Acleris notana and Ypsolopha ustella. 5 each of Satellite and Spring Usher headed the Macro list. The trap is all set again for tonight which promises to be just as mild.
